Garmin Connect mobile app causing Fenix 5 Plus to reboot on sync

Starting this morning (woke up with watch frozen/non-responsive, manually rebooted it), I'm seeing the following:

- Watch is connected to phone via Bluetooth
- Trigger sync via Garmin Connect mobile app
- When status indicator is ~1/3 of the way around the circle, watch "crashes" and reboots (triangle icon on screen)

Watch: Fenix 5 Plus, running v5.10 software.
App: iOS, App Version 4.13.1.2 (per "App Diagnostics")

I've tried;

- Disconnecting/reconnecting bluetooth connection
- Manually turning off/on the watch (via Light button)
- Deleting and reinstalling the mobile app
- Deleting all custom watch faces
- Plugging in to Garmin Express (v6.9.0.0) and manually syncing

Currently I've just got the connection between phone and watch turned off on the watch via Settings > Phone > Connection, and that seems to have things stable. As soon as I allow the watch + phone to connect, and trigger a sync via Garmin Connect, the watch crashes again.

Any tips/suggestions/pointers on where to go from here?

Thanks,
Beau

    I don't know what/if anything changed, but I reconnected today and it now seems to be working fine.

    This same problem is back again. Same details as above.

    I've updated everything (watch = 6.0, app = 4.13.2.1) since the initial report, and it's back to doing this same thing. I found a Sync Report in the app that seems to indicate "Device disconnected", but I don't know why that would be the case. Just tried deleting bluetooth connection and recreating, but that doesn't help either.

    In the most recent Sync Report, I now see these (hopefully relevant) details:

    (Under UPLOADS heading)
    FIT_TYPE_35 1-3970767919ble-FIT_TYPE_35-3110-65535-89460960479 Error

    (Under ERROR DETAILS heading)
    Error Domain=GCMSyncErrorDomain Code=2 "Device connection error" UserInfo={SyncErrorReason=File UL: Failed to receive file from device, NSLocalizedDescription=Device connection error, NSUnderlyingError=0x28022f1b0 {Error Domain=GarminDeviceSync.FileTransferErrorDomain Code=1 "(null)" UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0x28022ec70 {Error Domain=GarminDeviceMessageErrorErrorDomain Code=1 "(null)"}}}}

    This is getting super annoying :(
  • I’m having the exact same issue (started on 1st Jan through the night - so I assumed it was something to do with NYE, like I’m 19 years late for Y2K!) have been through hard resets, removing device from connect, removing connect app, syncing with Garmin express etc.
    Seems I get 60-70% through a sync and the watch (forerunner 935) restarts, I get the blue triangle.
    When trying on garmin express, the sync didn’t ever finish, it seems to get hung up and then I get an error message saying “we are having trouble reaching our servers” the internet connection is stable though.
    I’m on iOS 12.1.2. Watch software 12.1 (actually just reset itself when I checked that) - usually only resets when connected to garmin connect on the phone... hmmm

  • I’ve fixed mine. I think it was maybe to do with custom watch faces. In order to fix I had to install Garmin connect Mobile on a friends Iphone, pair with that, then it did a full sync with the watch. Once it had done that I re-paired with my app and all was back to normal. I then deleted everything off of my friends iPhone (8). Good luck!

    I'm not sure what changed, but yet again, this issue has gone away for me, and it's connected/syncing successfully now (starting a couple of days ago).
