Proper Activity Type For Tracking CrossFit Type Training

I am wondering what is the best activity to use when tracking CrossFit type training? I am a member of Iron Tribe Fitness where we do what I guess can be best described as a CrossFit style workout program. I have been using Cardio as my training type so far, but I am wondering if I should be using Strength Training or something else entirely to get a more accurate count of calories being burned during any given workout. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Kawika9. Did you ever figure out what to use? I have the Vivoactive 3 and find the custom workout feature a pain. I just want to activate a "weights" workout and proceed to do a variety of exercises using weights, or body weight, or tabata, etc. I just need to see my calories burned overall, my heart rate zones, and overall time spent working out. Why is this so hard?! I don't want to manually create workouts and then spent my time at the gym fiddling with my watch!

No...no responses by anyone other than yourself. I have just been using the basic Cardio selection for my workouts. For weight training I just use the Strength selection.
  • Hi Kawika.
I have bad experience with Strength mode in my Instinct with using optical HR sensor. You can see it in pictures. Graph 1 is workout with using optical sensor and graph 2 is another day workout with using ANT+ chest belt. Both in Strength activity. I wanted to use this mode due to counting resting time and numbers of series and repeats etc. But optical sensor works very bad with sudden changes of heart rate and moving your arm (device). I tested it several times. But! If I use for example "indoor cycling" mode during my strength workout, watches works better even with an optical sensor. I do not know why it is, but in strength mode + optical hr sensor, my heart rate values does not match reality. Wrong optical sensor or watch? I will still test it.
Does anyone have similar experiences? Thanks.

Hi kawika9, I also use the cardio setting on my Vivoactive3 Music, but I fear I’m not getting the info I need for CrossFit training. I see your post is a year old, have you found another way to register your CrossFit trainings in your Vivoactive 3?

Hi! I recommend the fbbbrown developer app “Strength Training+“

Check it out! I have been using their rowing app and it is great!

To clarify.. This is an app in the Garmin Connect IQ store.  Works well! They have a package with all of the apps together.  Very worth the money

To be fair it the one point I’m really disappointed on coming back to Garmin from Suunto. How in this day and age is there not a proper Garmin, preloaded training type for it?

Same. New to the garmin with my vivoactive 3. Replaced my fitbit ionic that had a generic weightlifting and workout feature that was great for the gym and crossfit. The weightlifting on the garmin is inaccurate counting my reps and I find it a pain to have to constantly be tapping it.
