Not receiving text messages on Forerunner 235

I just bought Forerunner 235
iPhone iOS version 11.4
Garmin Connect App version 4.8.0.16

I found the Smart Notifications on the Forerunner, but I cannot find Smart Notification controls ANYWHERE in the Connect App. I saw screenshots from a friend and her app has more robust options than mine. She has a "Sounds and Alerts" section in the app, and I do not. Any idea how to make sure Connect App is not somehow overriding the watch smart notification settings? I have been searching for over an hour. Thanks!
