Connect iOS app battery drain

Device iPhone X
Watch Fenix 5x
Connect 4.6.0.18

So for the last week or so I've had this massive battery drain on my phone like 20-30% extra a day and I've been checking and Connect has jumped from being low 4-5% a day to 15-19% a day with like 15 min on screen with 1.5-2 hours background a day...with background app refresh turned off. Anyone else experiencing a huge jump in battery drain here as of late?

-Tom
  • Not seeing it on mine. Showing 1% in the last 24hr. That's with it on 24/7 mostly in the background. Do a complete shutdown and restart of your iPhone:

    Quick press up volume button
    Quick press down volume button
Press and hold right side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Ok so since this post I've done some diagnostic work. (I do each step every morning and don't over lap)

    1) I did the hard restart like you recommended and that didn't work
    2) I uninstalled the app, disconnected the watch from bluetooth. Reconnected everything, that didn't work. (This lead to the app being in the back ground for 14 hours after)
    3) Turned off the bluetooth and restarted the watch. That didn't work.
    What did work
    4) Turn off bluetooth connection from the watch to the phone (disabling notifications and sync) leaving bluetooth on the phone on, but the app stopped running in the background.
    A) As soon as I turned the watch bluetooth back on the app started to run in the background again.
What I'm going to try today
    5) Going to turn off the 5x and return back to my olf VAHR and see if it's something with the watch keeping the app open or just the app.
  • Just a quick update since removing the 5x and going back to the VAHR, the app is acting the same way with keeping the phone "awake/usage" in the background. So to me there seems to be a problem with with my app setup or something that keeps the app awake when a watch is connected.
  • I have seen the same issue sice lately.

    My setup:
    iPhone X (11.3.1)
    Fenix 5 (9.02 Beta)
    Garmin Connect (4.7.0.14)

Not sure if it is caused by the watch (recently updated to the latest beta) or the GC app (also updated recently). Which firmware do you use on your Fenix 5x?
  • I'm running 8.0 on my fenix. Both iPhone and GCM both updated to most recent non-beta versions.

There is something going on with this app, when the watch is connected to the phone, the app will not allow the phone to go into "sleep"

Edit: Background app refresh is turned off...
  • So here is some more information, logging out of the app has no impact on if the app will stop running in the background. The only way I found for it to stop running in the background is if I go to the watch and from the quick select menu turn off BT connection so that the watch acts as basically a fitness watch with no "smart watch" features and sync via wifi. If I do that then the app works like it has been.

So it's like as soon as the watch is connected to the phones BT and the app is installed and is connected to the watch it will just run in the background no matter what I do.

Same problem here. IPhone 7, latest iOS and Connect Version. Garmin Vivoactive.
My battery use for the app is at 63% only for background activity!!
This startet ca. 10 days ago. Maybe that came with the last app-update?!?
Everything is disabled, except mobile data and the BT connection to the vivoactive.
Of course, I could disconnect the vivoactive, but tis is not what I want....

Any ideas? Wait and hope for the next update??
  • OK a new day a new update, after leaving the watch in "fitness mode" with its BT turned off, the app did something I've never seen it do with the 5x paired, the HR widget went to a graph instead of the normal "real time" view. Now the watch with BT turned back on the app is acting as it should without running non-stop in the background. I wonder if there is a bug in the HR widget that is forcing the app to run in the background and it takes a long time for that process to die within the app and once it resets the app will run normal again. I'll give an update tomorrow.
  • So it's been a few days and as long as I closed the app out in the background the app did not run, but today that did not work and the app ran for 16+ hours in the background without even being opened. So back to the drawing board.
