Lap swimming

Hi guys, can someone tell me why on occasion, my Garmin watch inaccurately counts my pool laps...eg ... I always do 20 x 50 metres, the watch will record 21 laps?
  • Your watch counts the laps by sensing your turns. It is probably a mixture of sensing some seconds of gliding without swim strokes and sensing the "hard" stop when you touch the wall before a turn.

So if you have too many laps, you have done something mid lap which the watch recognized as a turn. It could be some seconds with no swimming, or you bumping into something/someone.

And if you have too few laps, your turns are not "recognizable" enough. There is a thread somewhere in this forum where another user gave very detailed instructions on small improvement you can do to your swim style to make turns easier to recognize. But I don't have the link to that thread.
  • It counts laps with accelerometers. So suddenly speeding up to pass someone or slowing down will add lengths. Also fidgeting on the wall between laps (press the lap button at the start and stop of each length to avoid this).

    Thanks guys
But none of your suggestions apply to my swimming.
eg.... I do tumble turns, & I don’t stop between laps or half way up the pool.?
its no big deal, as I edit my event back to the correct count when I return home.
    Thanks
  • Even if you didn't press lap or stop at the very end it could record another lap (fidgeting on wall sometimes throws it off). Anyway, as you said, no big deal if you are talking about 1 lap.
