It won't help a great deal - the problem is with the appalling software. I've been using Connect on my (work) Android phone, which is pretty much okay, because the iOS version is so awful.
Because there have been a couple of updates to the iOS version since I last tried it, I thought I'd give it a go today. It took multiple attempts to persuade the Edge 1000 to pair at all, and then when it did the ensuing Livetrack failed sixty miles into the ride (to be fair, this represents slightly better than typical perfornce, compared to the last version I'd used on my iPhone). On getting home (after 4.5 hours), however, the phone - which had been more-or-less fully charged before the ride - was down to 15% battery, despite not having been used for anything else. Connect had used 76% of it - the next highest was Mail, at 4%. Obviously, discharging the phone almost completely in a morning effectively means the app is unusable, and your suggestion would clearly not have helped in this instance, because Locastion Services would be required for the app to function during the ride.
