Getting phone calls on my Drive 50

I bought and installed this (after my original Garmin conked out) and synced it with the Smart Link app on my iPhone. Driving along, the sat nav suddenly told me I was getting a phone call (and who from) and did I want to accept or reject the call. I accepted and spoke handsfree thru the satnav. The thing is I didn't know I had this facility. And - impressed - I tried it out again from a spare (emergency) mobile I have in the car (i.e. not the iPhone the sat nav was linked to). It didn't work - the call simply went thru to my iPhone. Tried several times but without joy.

Obviously being able to accepts (and I suppose make) calls handsfree using my sat nav is a great feature, but why did it only work once, and how can I set it up to work again and all the time.
The Garmin in question is a Drive 50LM5, but my wife also has a Garmin, a 51LMT-S which I would also like to set up to do the same thing. Every suggestion welcome.

    I just bought a Drive 50LMT5 to replace my 9 year old Nuvi 765T. I have an android phone rather than an iPhone and there is a smartphone link app in the Google Play store. However, I didn't see the Drive 50 listed as compatible. Only Drivesmart models are listed as compatible.

    It sounds like we have the same model GPS so I would love to see if/how this works. It would also be interesting to see if you can make a hands-free call and not just receive calls.

    Well, as I say I didn't even know I had the facility until a colleague rang me on my mobile and it flashed up on the sat nave 'accept/reject'. I accepted and had a short conversation via the sat nave (which has voice command). If I get any closer to solving this, I shall post here.
