Garmin Connect Sync on iOS 11

Since I updated to iOS 11, Garmin Connect Mobile no longer syncs with my Garmin Fenix 5S automatically via Bluetooth. I need to open the GC Connect App, and them manually click on the sync button (or do the same on my watch).

As I wrote before - after updating to iOS 11.0.1 connection is way more stable in my case. I still have sometimes to force shut down GC app from multi tasking view in order to make my Fenix 3 visible but after that the sync is working.

Does that mean that smart notifications work fine for you?

Generally speaking they work for me. I'm still not sure at what point it things fail and the connection is lost.

I have same problem on Garmin Fenix 3 with iOS 11.0.1. It will connect, if you swipe up to Control Center, turn off Bluetooth, then turn it back on, then go to Garmin Connect. It has to be done every time.

Same problem here: forerunner 235, iphone 6s on ios 11.0.1. Syncing is not possible. I was angry so I deleted the watch in my Garmin app. Now I tried to re-pair but now my phone and 235 does not find each other. Settings - bluetooth does not seem to find my my watch either.

Im having same issue and I?m fed up about it as this kind of thing was the main reason I binned Sunnto for Garmin.

My Fenix 5 now drops sync with my iPhone 7 regularly and I can only get the auto-sync back by rebooting the phone. Real pain.

What do you mean when you say "repair" ... ? Reset the network settings on your phone? Remove your watch from GCM and try to re-add it? Something else?

Some people have said that resetting the network settings on the phone then fulling adding the watch back in GCM via bluetooth did the trick. But i have a feeling the problem is more general than that and will require either an update from Garmin or Apple (or both).

I am guessing he means re-pair, as in a new attempt to pair the devices, as opposed to repairing as in fixing ;-)

  • I wonder why more people aren't reporting this? Well, whatever! Staying on the bleeding edge of tech has always come with issues. Take the Epix, please. Ha ha. Right, anyway, the only way I've found to have sync work reliably and every time, since moving to ios11, is to make sure that you keep Connect in the last couple of Apps on your phone. As in, check the weather, read your email, open Connect, look at a video, answer a text, open Connect. I'm not saying to close Connect when you're done with it - just that you need to keep it live and fresh at the top of the phone's list of running Apps. So this means that Apple changed the way they "sleep" and "wake" Apps and/or Garmin isn't implementing that correctly. Doesn't really matter which is the problem because Garmin will probably have to change the App to get it to work properly. This is a pretty annoying behavior, alas.

Garmin Connect is the only App that is not doing Background sync correctly on iOS 11. And you going to connect triggers a sync (after a few seconds, you can just open it and wait a few seconds, it should start sync, even if you change it to background again). Is just like if the automatic/periodic background sync is disabled on iOS 11.
