Question about resting calories

I recently switched from wearing an apple watch to wearing my Garmin 24/7. One question I have is regarding the resting calories calculation in the Garmin Connect app. From reading the description within the app, it seems as though resting calories as calculated by Garmin is not quite the same as BMR. Is this correct? From various online calculators, my BMR should be somewhere between 1750-1800, but Garmin Connect is calculating my resting calories closer to 2100-2250. If this is supposed to be my BMR, then this is obviously not correct. If it is supposed to be my BMR + non exercise calories burned then it is more realistic. If that's the case, then what constitutes "active" calories? It can't just be calories from activities because my run from yesterday calculated 600 calories burned, but my active calories were 783 for the day. Basically I'm just trying to figure out how trustworthy these numbers are.
  • I am having the exact same problems. I have tried contacting Garmin support about the overestimation of resting calories. I believe they are calculating the RMR rather than the BMR, just as you described it. However, it doesn't make sense when the watch registers active calories throughout the day. In that way, you double count the calories. As it is now, you cannot trust the total calories. I hope they will fix the resting calories calculation, so you can choose to have the BMR instead of the RMR.
