GC iOS interfering with/breaking High Power Gesture mode (seconds of CIQ Watch face)

Devices:
- Forerunner 935 with firmware 3.30
- Apple iPhone 7 with latest version of GC iOS

Odd Behavior:
- when my watch is connected to my phone (bluetooth), and using a Connect IQ watch face (NoFrills, Simple Big, VSWF, Big and Lean, etc.), the ability to "excite" high powered mode and have the seconds field show when a wrist/arm gesture is made, doesn't work, after a short while*

*short while = anywhere from 10-60 minutes after having last "reset" the watch face (see below)

Solutions (all kludgy, IMHO):
- if the gesture isn't working, if the watch face is reset, then it starts working again for a while. there are a few ways to reset the watch face including: entering and exiting the Activity menu (start/stop button), using the up and down buttons to enter and exit the widgets, or entering and leaving the hotkey menu (light button).

- if i turn off bluetooth or force quit the iOS connect app, then the seconds will show reliably with gesture as long as i don't reconnect my phone to the watch.

- i can also get it to work if i have the Backlight setting for Watch mode set for Gestures to either ON or ON after Sunset. for either of these settings, the problem does not happen regardless of the time of day. i.e., for ON after sunset, whether the backlight goes on or not (before sunset and during DND hours, the backlight doesn't go one with a gesture, but the seconds still gets displayed as they should be).

anyway, i'm perplexed at what is causing this. i never encountered this issue with my Forerunner 735XT in the year i owned it. as noted above, i have a couple kludgy fixes to get around the problem, but it would prefer the watch to work properly without such a workaround.

has anyone else seen this problem? do the Garmin engineering folks have any thoughts? i'm happy to help troubleshoot. i've already reboot (soft) my watch and phone multiple times without any improvement to the situation. i don't like the idea of doing a hard reset of my watch (lest i lose my "record data" and VO2 max, training stats.). next step may be to re-install the Garmin Connect app on my phone.
