Forerunner 735xt not communicating with app - need help!

Hello,

I have the Garmin Forerunner 735xt and up until today it has been operating fine. However, when I try going to my calendar and a few other features on the watch, it says "App Connection Required". If I have the app open on my phone, it syncs and shows me my calendar/weather etc. However, as soon as I close the app on my phone it goes back to saying App connection required. Do I really need to have the app open on my phone every time I want to check my calendar, weather etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!
  • However, as soon as I close the app on my phone it goes back to saying App connection required.
Why do you close the app, instead of simply taking focus away from it and put some other app in the foreground instead?

    Yes.
  • I don't have to have the app open and they come through.
    FR735 with iPhone 6s ios10
occasionally notifications stop and i have to reset the watch, then they work again
  • As far as I recall, smart notifications will go through to the Garmin device even if the Garmin Connect Mobile app for iOS is not open, as long as the Garmin and iOS devices remain connected; however, not so for updates in Weather and Calendar widgets on the Garmin device.

You are correct. On iOS, notifications work without the app being open. Weather and calendar widgets require the app to be open in the background at least.
  • I usually solve these issues by:

    - rebooting the watch
    - rebooting the iPhone

I had a completely stuck sync cycle once and was ready to reset the watch to factory defaults but solved it by starting a new activity on the watch, let it run for a couple of minutes and ending it normally. After that dummy activity got transferred everything was back to normal.
