Auto sync Fenix 3 with iPhone

Last year I bought a Fenix 3 and I've been using it a lot. For the last year or so I always opened Garmin Connect Mobile and waited a little while until my iPhone starts syncing with the F3. However, I seem to remember that when I just got my watch, i didn't even have to open the GCM app and my iPhone would automatically sync with the F3.

Is this option (i.e. background syncing) available (i.e am I not crazy) or am I remembering things that are not real?

I have the same issue - its like it forgot how to auto sync
