To clarify for others:
I had a similar problem with my Vivoactive 4s. Some crude data such as total daily step count was transferring on sync but not the detailed stuff such as the step count graph, body battery, and other graphs, which all stopped abruptly from about 10 hours earlier in the day. Tried restarting the watch, the app and my iPhone. Nothing worked.
Then I tried Karen22p's suggestion:
1. Close the Garmin Connect app on your phone.
2. Sync using the sync icon in the Controls Menu on your watch (may be different for other models).
3. Open the Garmin Connect app – detailed data now shows in the app
