Age in Connect App

My two children got Garmin devices recently. When setting up their accounts I was unable to select their actual age. It appears the app only allows somebody 13 years or older to register?

From the Garmin (Australia) web site,

    Privacy Statement

Your privacy is important to Garmin. We developed this Privacy Statement so you know how we collect, use, disclose, transfer and store your information.

Our products and applications are not directed to individuals under the age of 13, and we request that individuals under 13 not provide Personal Information to Garmin through any Garmin website or through our products and applications. If we learn that we have collected the Personal Information of a child under 13, we will take steps to delete the information as soon as possible.

so the app would only be enforcing the company's policy, when everything from user profiles to activity data in relation to the use of fitness tracking devices would be considered personal information.

So basically you either lie about their age or put them under your account, which makes your statistics useless. Neither is a great solution. It isn't possible to use a Garmin device without a Connect account.

If Garmin intends to allow somebody under the age of 13 to wear one of their fitness devices, they need to create an account type that doesn't include the social aspect so it is safe for children.

… which, the company has already stated, is not its intention.

Anything to do with an individual's physiological attributes including age, height, weight, fitness, etc. is personal information, which Garmin does not want to either acquire or retain for anyone under the age of 13.
