iPhone Notifications - Mark as Read

Why doesn't or can't "clearing" the notification mark the message as read on the iPhone?

Clearing a message notification in the Notification Centre in iOS does not in fact mark the message as read, either. Surely you knew that already?

Tapping on a message notification in the Notification Centre implicitly clears the notification, and activates the associated app on the iOS device so the user could actually read the message. Reading the text in the NC itself is not considered having read the message, and tapping on the ⊗ for the section heading inside the NC, which then turns into a (CLEAR) button for the user to confirm the operation, does not mark the message(s) associated with the notification(s) as read in the associated app.

:-) I guess I phrased my question poorly. I just wanted to understand where the limitation was, whether Garmin or iOS. It would be helpful to be able to choose the action that occurs on the phone (e.g. whether the notification is just dismissed as it is today, or marked Read, or Deleted) when a notification is acted on on the watch.

The limitation is in that events (including receipt of messages in particular apps) and notifications are logically different things, irrespective of whether the user see them as practically equivalent.

Let's say you receive a message (“Could you please pick up a two-litre bottle of wool bleach from Woolworths on your way home? It's on special this week.” from user MaryLittleLamb) as a user of the OohTalkCleanToMe app. The app decides what goes into the content of the notification – perhaps taking into account some user-specified settings if the app developer so allows, and perhaps not – and neither Apple/iOS nor Garmin has a say in that. The notification content could convey:

• You received a new message.
  
• You (now) have three unread messages.
  
• You received a new message from MaryLittleLamb.
  
• MaryLittleLamb said, “Could you please pick up…”
  
• You haven't read your messages in 48 hours. Isn't it high time for you to do so?
  

singularly on in combination, without warranting any assumption that the entire text of the received message is contained in the notification. (From my testing as a user, each notification that get sent to my Garmin Forerunner 235 can only contain 700 characters of content.)

You can acknowledge a notification (and dismiss it and/or mark it as read), but not all notifications correspond to receipt of incoming messages from other parties that can also has a logical state of having been read.

Remember it's not a fully-fledged smartphone you're wearing.

I think I understand that each app is different and that this isn't a full-fledged smartwatch. In fact, it's what I enjoy about it. But, let me ask one last question (prefacing that I'm neither a developer or programmer):

Can Garmin handle different responses to notifications back to the device, generally iOS or Android, if the app provided handling for different actions in their API (and no way to include this for the myriad of apps out there but each ecosystem [iOS/Android] has a basic set [messaging/email])? Of course, my question is a little silly if that's the definition of the notification capability, notify/dismiss only ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
