I'm figuring out there is a difference between the type of activity I record on my Vivoactive. I used to just record everything as walking as it felt like that was the type of activity I normally do. However, now I think I'm going to record everything as running. I debated what to use since I have been using an elliptical machine.

The reason for the revelation was when I saw the Calories section on Connect Mobile. On that view and others, it shows a split between walking and running. When I track my activities as walking, there is just one solid bar of all walking calories. If I tract my activities as running, however, I can see at a glance how many calories were due to normal daily output, and how many are due to my workout. It gives new meaning to what I'm doing.

Actually I would like to see Garmin modify those graphs to show activity calories vs. normal calories. Then it wouldn't matter what category I choose.

I believe the graphs shown on the GC web site will do this. Another benefit of using running is that the distance (albeit probably inaccurate, especially for elliptical) will be shown on the snapshot graph.
