LiveTrack Failure - Devs, come look! Quick!

I know there are several of threads on LiveTrack disconnecting & failures, but I'm starting my own thread here to document my own issues with the 920xt. I added some photos of what I'm seeing below. I spoke with Garmin Support today on the phone and supposedly, the developers are aware of the LiveTrack issues and should be issuing a new app within a week.

"The developers aren't accepting any new information on LiveTrack; they have what they need!" Somehow I don't believe that. I've been submitting reports since January 6, 2015 with no fix. :(

I can only hope that LiveTrack fix addresses several Use Cases (Garmin developers, pay attention!!!):
  • Connect LiveTrack to a workout-in-progress, e.g. at T1 of a triathlon so you can keep your phone with your bike while you swim.
  • At a triathlon, connect LiveTrack during transition area setup with activity not started, leave phone at bike, start watch when race starts, and then after the swim at T1, the LiveTrack reconnects with watch automatically since it's in range.
  • If the device syncs the current workout with the phone since the workout completed, the phone app should surely recognize that LiveTrack should end and shut it down.
  • Start activity with LiveTrack, shut down Garmin device to reset it (e.g. to fix ANT+ issues), restart the device, and if you answer Yes to "continue workout?", LiveTrack should also continue.
  • Phone loses cellular/data connection, but later regains it before activity completed.
  • Phone loses cellular/data connection, but does not regain it before activity completed.
  • Bluetooth connection is lost at the phone, e.g. toggling Bluetooth on phone.
  • Phone shuts off during LiveTrack, e.g. a battery pull, and phone turned back on- LiveTrack should still be in-progress.
  • LiveTrack works during swimming, i.e. heavy intermittent connection losses. E.g. putting phone in your swim cap while doing an open water swim.
  • The Garmin Connect app should not start LiveTrack unless there is an active Bluetooth connection to the device. Otherwise, you get a false sense that it's going to work when there's really not a connection at all: you'll never see a "phone disconnected" message because there never was a connection but you get really happy thinking this is the time it finally worked!

Like others, I start LiveTrack, tell my friends and loved-ones "Look at me!", but we all wind up disappointed when LiveTrack ends 5 minutes into the activity. I recently had LiveTrack fail at a Half Ironman race, which was really disappointing, because my family didn't know when I was going the make the second bike course lap.

I'm currently using firmware 4.20 on my 920xt and keep my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 software up-to-date, currently at Android 5.0 (OE1 build).

Once I get the dreaded, "Phone Disconnected" error message on the watch, I know that LiveTrack has failed. Even if get a subsequent "Phone Connected" message, LiveTrack does not continue where it left off. At that point, my phone is left in a LiveTrack In-Progress state that I can't disconnect or stop by pressing the "red" kill button:

After clicking "yes" to end tracking, it just goes back to the in-progress page.

When I go to the LiveTrack website, I get the following error, "No signal, trying to connect", meanwhile, my watch has already told me that phone has reconnected:

Once the LiveTrack fails, the only way to stop it is by going to Applications -> Application Manager -> Garmin Connect and hitting "clear data", but then you need to re-login to the Garmin Connect app and re-pair the phone Bluetooth connection:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed Garmin fixes LiveTrack. For me it's the reason I bought the 920xt over a discounted 910xt. Keeps me safe, lets my family know where I am, and gives me a way to poke jabs at friends who are busy at work while I go wild!
  • No information, as usual...
I'll have an ultra race in august and a WORKING livetrack would be nice...
  • Now Smart Notifications Failure

So my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 5.0 (OE1 build) finally pulled Garmin Connect 2.13.0.1 from the Play Store. I performed an outdoor Run activity with my 920xt at firmware version 4.20 in conjunction with 2.13.0.1 and with LiveTrack started. As expected, about 30 minutes into the run I got a "Phone Disconnected" alert and about 10 seconds later a "Phone Connected" alert. This would normally cause LiveTrack to fail, but to my pleasant surprise, when I got home I saw that the LiveTrack maintained a track on the website! This is the first time I've ever seen LiveTrack survive a Bluetooth disconnection, so 2.13.0.1 updates definitely helped.

HOWEVER, I did notice that after the Bluetooth disconnection I stopped getting Smart Notifications on the watch. My phone's speaker was going off so I know I was receiving texts/priority emails, but they weren't showing up on the watch. Before the Bluetooth disconnection I was receiving Smart Notifications as expected. During the activity I went to the 920xt's Settings -> Smart Notifications and it showed no device connected. It didn't surprise me at the time, but after I later saw that LiveTrack was still working, it didn't make sense that there was "no device connected" since LiveTrack was working, i.e. there was a phone connection. (Unless tracking duties were handled by the Garmin Connect app and not the watch.)

While Smart Notifications are not as important to me as LiveTrack is, it still is a major Bluetooth connectivity bug that needs to be resolved.

I just noticed that 920xt firmware 5.20 is now available. I'll do some testing with that build to see if Bluetooth conditions improved.
  • Live Track fails Garmin Edge 810 with iPhone 4s

    Hi Devs,
I also have to report continuous Live Track failures for several month with various software versions on my Edge 810 and the connected iPhone. Just mountain biking, I get a sudden message on my Garmin 810, that Live Track ended. Restarting Live Track does not help as you can see in the attached screenshot, as the next failure occurred just three minutes later (see attached screenshots). This is definitely not the kind of system quality I expect from a company like Garmin. Is there any remedy?
This is the configuration of the failures described in the screenshots:
Garmin Edge 810 (4.20) with Garmin Connect App (3.0.0.27) on iPhone 4s (iOS 8.4.1).
If you have any question, please let me know. I will be happy to support you improving my Edge 810.
    Best regards
    Oliver
  • LiveTrack is still not working. Even while using 920xt firmware 6.10 and Android Garmin Connect 3.1.0.1 there are still frequent failures.

Also, after calling to Garmin Support recently I was informed that you must start LiveTrack BEFORE you start the activity recording on your Garmin device. What a great undocumented feature! (Note: SARCASM!)

LiveTrack used to work if you started an activity and forgot to start LiveTrack... what do you do in that use case? Stop/save the activity, start LiveTrack and restart the activity? Wow... I'm very disappointed in the quality of Garmin's engineering staff.

Just got this LiveTrack failure the other day AFTER the activity completed and was already uploaded to Garmin Connect. Somehow LiveTrack didn't get the message.

  • Fenix 2:

Changes made from version 4.40 to 4.50:
    Fixed issue with LiveTrack

Not really... Fw 4.50, Sony Z3 and livetrack is still showing only the blue dot. No speed/distance info, no route.
