Fenix 3 Bluetooth Pairing Fails

I cannot pair my Fenix 3 with the Garmin Connect Android App on my Xperia Z1 Compact.

The Fenix 3 has been registered with my Garmin Connect account through Garmin Express.
My Home Wireless network has been set up.
The device even shows up on my list of devices in the Garmin Connect Android App

I initiate pairing from the Fenix 3, which goes into 'Ready to Pair'. Then select 'Pair Device' in Garmin Connect Android App..... The search begins and after a minute of so I get the 'Device Not Found' message on the phone

I already have an Edge 1000, which has paired with the phone/app without problem

  • My phone is sony xperia z.

When I select "Pair Mobile Device" from my fenix 3 HR, my phone shows "Unfortunately, Bluetooth Share has stopped."

I tried reinstalling garmin connect, clearing cache, rebooting phone but none worked. My phone, garmin connect and fenix 3 are all up to date.

I havent tried the factory reset. but i wonder if it'll work...

without pairing, it's not so useless. maybe i should return my fenix 3.
  • Do not pair with Android before GCM!

Glad to hear it is working for you!
We would like to stress that the Fenix 3 is not designed to pair in the Bluetooth settings of your phone. Users must start the pairing in Garmin Connect Mobile in order to see the pairing work properly. Thank you all for your patience!

Darn! I just lost a couple of hours because I had overlooked that little piece of information. Very glad I looked it up. This is rather counter intuitive, I wish your software engineers would find ways to make it work this way as well or, at least, find ways to inform users about how the "Garmin pairing" differs from the standard bluetooth pairing.

    Anyway, many thanks.

I have the same problem with newly refurbished Garmin 3. I had my previous Garmin 3 for more them two years and there never had been a problem with Bluetooth connection independently of installed software version.  I just worked.  And since I got new one it just doesn't.

  • Perhaps you need to remove the old pairing from the phone. And there are plenty of other possibilities what may be wrong. Use the troubleshooting guide from the top of this forum, it should help.

  • Bought used Garmin Fenix 3 and using Android SM-J320FN (Android 7.1.2)

    Installed Garmin Connect latest version.

Bluetooth shows Fenix3 (Bluetooth enabled) in list. Sync's data thru WiFi fine.

If i try to connect putting F3 to Ready to Pair mode , phone keeps searching. If i try same with computer - BT finds device and Garmin shows key to pair, and pairs with computer.

With Phone it keeps searching and no connection.

Error in F3 software or some flaw between Garmin and Samsung Phones?

I tried thru all suggested versions of getting device paired above in theme but seems no go.

Any solution upcoming from Garmin side, due i do not really don't feel call to United States from Europe would be healthy to my wallet.

  • As stated earlier in this thread - you must remove any existing pairing of the watch-phone, before pairing it through the Garmin Connect Mobile app. Having it already previously paired will prevent GC to pair.

Garmin has support phone numbers, as well as chat options, in most european countries. See your local contacts at http://support.garmin.com/

  • The whole thing is SM-J320FN i use as Phone has officcial 5.1.1, so i upgraded to Resurrection Remix 7.1.2 Custom ROM.

    Garmin Fenix3 was reset.

Phone was in Clean state - only contacts downloaded from Google Cloud, any other apps were not installed.

In Bluetooth list Fenix 3 is to see, trying directly connect to it - Wrong PIN or not paired error. (Which is OK for non-paired device)

installed Connect Mobile app from Play-store.

    Logged in with my account,

Pressing + on main screen of APP, it starts detecting devices, Phone GPS ON, Bluetooth ON WiFi on.

F3 was already Bluetooth ON, Pair new Device running.

Nothing, no connection - Failed to connect to device in APP log.

While under Bluetooth, if to switch there , it shows Fenix3 pairing.

Did do all above , even checked if all location access and stuff is enabled on phone, High accuracy set etc.

Specially granting all rights to Garmin Connect

    No go.

At work , i tried with co-workers Fenix 5x - connection to my phone established PIN asked and connected.

My Fenix3 did same on his Samsung S10 Plus (Android 10) - PIN popped on Fenix screen and enter PIN screen on his phone.

Is there any older version of Garmin Connect Mobile available for download to use with 5.1.1 original software?

garmin.com/BLE which is suggested to check for phone compatibility is not working.

  • One thing i managed to track down - fenix 3 does not pla ball with bluetooth 4.0 and 4.1 no matter of Android version. Same for iphone.  Bluetooth version. 4.2 or 5.0 works.

  • Pair the Fenix 3 with the phone using the phone bluetooth menu first, like you would for a pair of earbuds. Once paired successfully, pair again using the Garmin Connect app. That worked for me on my Samsung Galaxy android phone
