Forerunner 920XT issues - GCM hanging and Re-pairing required with pin

Hi guys

Hopefully support read this forum so it is a useful post and also to hear from others with similar problems

My setup
GCM 2.5.2
FR920XT (firmware 2.5)
Android 4.4.4
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Issue #1 sync hang

Had a lot of hanging when the forerunner is syncing.. in the image you see that the sync is hanging half way through. Once it hangs nothing to do but try and crash it (usually by turning off bluetooth on phone)
I think I have found a work around (think).. which is to leave GCM using the back buttons (repeated until it takes me back to the home screen) rather than use the home screen button.

Issue #2 re-pairing with pin
This is the real biggy
Several times a day I go out of range of the phone. When I do the connection is lost and the only way I can get it to re-establish the connection is through re-pairing using the pin.
If it was a 'click here to reconnect' button it would be fine.. but the whole thing means I need to ..
a. pull down the notifications bar from the top and click on the Yes to connect request (when the phone spots a request)
b. pull down the notification bar from the top again and this time go through the re-pairing process by entering the pin showing on the watch.

It is seriously taking away from my 920XT experience

Things to note
1. I am a long term Garmin user and have used GCM/bluetooth with my Edge 810, Vivofit and FR620 (the 620 could be fussy and not always connect, but usually worked)
2. I have tried the usual..
  • Turn on turn off Bluetooth
  • Turn on turn off phone
  • Remove device and re-pair
  • Uninstall and reinstall GCM

Would love to hear if this is a known issue that others are experiencing and if Garmin are working on some fix

To garmin.. really don't mind being a tester.. been with you guys since the FR301 :-)
  • Hi Everyone - The Bluetooth update is not in the recent 2.70 release (that release was already in the works prior to making the upcoming Bluetooth changes). It will be coming in the next release and should be available soon. Thanks for your patience!

Also, a GCM update won't be needed, just new firmware for the 920XT.

Thanks for the updated info.. appreciated

Unfortunately with the latest GCM update (2.8) and 920XT 2.70 firmware it still requires a lot of repairing with PIN. Somehow it seems that GCM removes the pairing when the watch and phone are out of range. Also sometimes the connection just stops afer a few hours.

I've been having this "reconnect with PIN" coming up on my Nexus 5 (Android 5.0.1) pairing with a 920XT (2.70), except that I can't see where to enter a PIN (I don't see an input field on the phone) and I don't see a PIN displayed on the 920XT either. So I just tap OK and it seems to work. I am having other connection problems such as it not uploaded my activities, but I can wait for a fix for that (WiFi and USB connections work fine).

Is the update present in beta 3.03 FW?
  • Hope not, because still the same for me.

    Sorry to hear it.

I updated to the 3.03 beta just for some hours now and bluetooh connection with my nexus 6 is working pretty well. Very stable. No drops.

I also did some tests like switch off and then on mobile and reconnection is working too. I also went for a run without phone and when at home FR920XT connect again to nexus 6 by itself (not necessary to push any 920 button or touch my phone).

Well, looks like I spoke to early. 3.03 is more stable but still having random reconnection issues....
  • My 920XT has just been replaced by Garmin for a new unit.
The issues I had recently with the HR strap seem to be resolved now (it would drop and reconnect during an activity - this happened after a couple of months of solid use). I am officially a happy bunny.

More surprising though is that my bluetooth connection seems more stable
(same firmware as my old unit but GCM is different).. it was actually a shock when it reconnected without any prompting. It completely made me do one of those comic double takes!
It is of course early days.. but... could it be a case of defective sensor in the old unit on top of software issues? (i.e. not one single issue but multiple)..

At the moment I am trying to make the watch pairing stumble but it is being rock solid. There is a happy bunny wary of emerging from the burrow too soon.. but the bunny is definitely peering out :-)
  • Wow.. I am definitely a happy bunny

I suspect it is a combination of one or more of the following..
[1] Replaced 920XT unit due to potentially dodgy sensors
    [2] Firmware 2.70
    [3] New update to GCM
[4] Tweaks in CM12 (I am running Cyanogenmod 12 on Xperia Z1 Compact)

Since my first pairing on Monday first thing, I have had the bluetooth connection rocksolid with no repainring requests.
Go out of range.. come back in range and it is silently re-paired

The only thing I need to do is in the morning restart GCM (I am rooted so can do that easily).. at night I turned off the bluetooth on the phone and the GCM restart seems to reconnect immediately (and is non intrusive for me to do)

Yay.. I wanted to love this watch but the Android experience was dampening the experience.. now I am completely smitten (as with all love affairs.. the last few months of difficulties are all forgotten/forgiven)

Same experience for me ... Garmin 920Xt with 3.03 beta firmware and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact ... definitely better than what it was with 2.7 firmware but still on some some days, it will require re-pin.

I believe that the issue might not just be on Garmin side because I've had some compatibility issues with other bluetooth devices on my Z1 Compact. Let's hope the Lolipop upgrade fixes that.
