Forerunner 920XT issues - GCM hanging and Re-pairing required with pin

Hi guys

Hopefully support read this forum so it is a useful post and also to hear from others with similar problems

My setup
GCM 2.5.2
FR920XT (firmware 2.5)
Android 4.4.4
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Issue #1 sync hang

Had a lot of hanging when the forerunner is syncing.. in the image you see that the sync is hanging half way through. Once it hangs nothing to do but try and crash it (usually by turning off bluetooth on phone)
I think I have found a work around (think).. which is to leave GCM using the back buttons (repeated until it takes me back to the home screen) rather than use the home screen button.

Issue #2 re-pairing with pin
This is the real biggy
Several times a day I go out of range of the phone. When I do the connection is lost and the only way I can get it to re-establish the connection is through re-pairing using the pin.
If it was a 'click here to reconnect' button it would be fine.. but the whole thing means I need to ..
a. pull down the notifications bar from the top and click on the Yes to connect request (when the phone spots a request)
b. pull down the notification bar from the top again and this time go through the re-pairing process by entering the pin showing on the watch.

It is seriously taking away from my 920XT experience

Things to note
1. I am a long term Garmin user and have used GCM/bluetooth with my Edge 810, Vivofit and FR620 (the 620 could be fussy and not always connect, but usually worked)
2. I have tried the usual..
  • Turn on turn off Bluetooth
  • Turn on turn off phone
  • Remove device and re-pair
  • Uninstall and reinstall GCM

Would love to hear if this is a known issue that others are experiencing and if Garmin are working on some fix

To garmin.. really don't mind being a tester.. been with you guys since the FR301 :-)
  • This really is turning into an unpleasant experience.
I see the potential in the 920XT/Android but the execution just isn't good

Anyone using Android and a 920XT and NOT having to re-pair with a pin a few times a day?
  • Unfortunately I can only confirm that it still doesn´t work under Android 5.0.
Everytime my Forerunner 920XT loses connection to my Nexus 5 I have to repair the devices. Same problem with my wives Vivosmart and her Nexus 5.

On one hand I am glad that I am not alone.. on the other hand I feel your pain.
    Very unpleasant experience
  • in the vivosmart forum there is a statement from garmin concerning these bluetooth issues. i hope garmin is also addressing these upcoming fixes to our 920xt.
i really don´t know if this is a firmware related issue or if garmin connect mobile needs a fix

...or something that Nexus have done with their version of Android 5.0 that doesn't work well with Garmin. There are two sides to the coin and there are many different versions of Android unfortunately.
  • the problem already existed with Android 4.4 before Google released the update for the Nexus devices.
  • I also own Z1 compact with 4.4.4 and 920xt and have exactly same issue.
I really cannot understand how Google and Garmin can't sort this out.

So frustrating.. The Z1 Compact is a great pairing for the watch.. small and waterproof
I got a reply from garmin support last night which just fobbed me off saying our phone isn't on the supported list.
However the Z2 is on their supported list and which is basically the same phone with a larger screen. Luckily a neighbour has that phone so I am going to see if it has the same issue. And then reply to the email

Got some great news.. I think a fellow triathlete helped me out to get to a solution for our Z1 compact issues.. I got rid of sony's rom and installed cyanogen.
It now reconnects with issue or prompt

Only just done it so wanna live with it for a bit before I suggest you do it (if you wanna do at all.. Is a hammer to a nail type fix)
    But am really excited
  • I also own Galaxy S5 with 4.4.2 and 920xt and have exactly same issue.

I hope there will be a fix soon.

    thank you
