Connected GPS issue - permissions need to be reset to enable logging

I've noticed this happen twice on my android phone in the past week where connected GPS fails to function. When I check the app permissions, I see Garmin Connect still has full permission for location information. However, when starting an activity, it does not pick up anything from my phone.

If I toggle the permission off and back on, location data is picked up. This doesn't seem to be a gps lock issue, as it works immediately after resetting the location permissions. Android doesn't even show a log of location data being accessed by Garmin connect when I initiate a manual activity.

Once I do the permission reset, android shows the location data getting accessed.

  • After over a month, this issue is still happening to me. I've had it go a week between it happens. I've just had it happen two days in a row. It's effectively forced me to check every time I start an outdoor activity to make sure it's actually counting distance and Android is logging location information for Garmin Connect.

I have battery management unrestricted for Garmin Connect and have location permissions set to "all the time".

  • Since you have the location permissions enabled to "All the Time", do you then have the option to toggle on "Use Precise Location"?

  • Yes, that option is available and turned on.

  • Can you please upload a video or screenshots of those settings and what happens when the Connected GPS does fail/not work? Garmin Secure File Upload

Can you also tell me what phone and OS you have, as well as the version of Connect you are using?

  • Attached are my location settings for Garmin Connect. I don't actually notice that the connected GPS not working as I start an activity using the button on my Cirqa and only notice after I've completed the activity when I don't see GPS data included.

For the activities where I for sure want to have tracking, I end up taking my phone out, launching Garmin connect, make sure it is actually showing distance being tracked, and verifying that location data is being accessed. If it isn't, I stop the activity, reset the permissions, and restart the activity.

In one instance, after I returned from a walk, I noticed the GPS track was incomplete. It appears that the app stopped getting location data mid-activity.

When I go into the permission settings, I see that Garmin Connect has not received phone location data. Here is a screenshot where that appears, but this is for an activity where it did work:

    I am using a Samsung Zflip6 on Android 16.

    Garmin connect is version 5.29.

  • Have you already attempted Garmin Connect app cache and restarting the phone after? Does force closing your Connect app restore GPS location or is the only workable step to toggle permissions off then back on?

  • When the problem occurs, the most reliable way to get it working is to force a permission reset. I've cleared the cache on the app previously, but never as a troubleshooting step. Ivr also force closed the app when this problem occurs, but that doesn't seem like a reliable solution.

I'm trying to get out for my activity, so standing there and spending time troubleshooting isn't exactly top of the list.

  • Issue happened again today. I had done a cache clear earlier in the day. Here is the activity logged and the corresponding screenshot from the Garmin Connect permissions page.

This is an activity that should have GPS data from connected GPS, but you can see from the app permissions it had not been accessed for over 12 hours.
