Bug: significant background power consumption on Android phone after 28.05 update on Forerunner 955

Watch Model: Forerunner 955

Watch version: 28.05

Phone Model/OS: Oppo Reno13 5G / ColorOS 16.0.5 (Android 16)

Garmin Connect+ version: 5:25

Problem

Occasionally there is significant background battery drain on my phone caused by Garmin Connect+. I've observed this twice so far.

I believe it is triggered when an activity is started (such as a Run), however it doesn't occur consistently.
Below are some screenshots of the battery consumption. My run was from ~3:30-5:00. Battery drain continued after the run activity had been stopped.
Usage by Garmin Connect+ is significantly higher than my other applications. For comparison, I had Youtube Music in the background during the entire run, which was only 2.58% of battery consumption. In the 4:00-5:00 period, 189mAH were consumed in the background by Garmin Connect+.

Solution

Force stopping the app does not work (the app never stops). Clearing the cache also does not work.

To stop the background battery drain, Bluetooth needs to be turned off then on.

This is not ideal as by the time I notice the battery drain, it's already drained 20%+ of my battery.

  • This could be caused by the live activity in Connect if that is set for your Run activity profile since you mention it being higher during that activity time frame. We have also since this post released a Connect app update to version 5.26. Please make sure you are updating to that version, try uninstalling/reinstalling Connect and let us know if this is still happening so we can look at other troubleshooting.
