Best times in activities

Hi! What happened to best times in activities. Maybe I'm mixing apps and Garmin never offered that, but I remember that it was possible to check best times in all running activities. For example: run lenght 12km, then by going to a tab with best time it was possible to check best 1km, best 5km, best 10km. Now I can't find it. I checked a watch, app and web version. Or maybe there was never such option in Garmin. :) Then it would be nice to have it.

  • You can check your Personal Records by going to the three dots in the bottom right of the Connect app. Then select Activities> any activity you want to view PR> then under the graph should be a bar that says "View Personal Records". This will open up and give you the option to then view them by activity type.

  • Thanks. Unfortunately, this isn't the answer to my question, but I may have phrased it poorly. The option you suggested shows exactly the same results no matter which activity you select, because it just displays your overall personal records. For example, if I set my best 10 km time a year ago and haven't beaten it since, then in every activity I'll be taken to my personal records tab and see that same time from a year ago.

What I'm looking for is the ability to check the best split times within a specific activity. For instance, I ran 12 km today and I want to see what my best 1 km, 5 km, and 10 km times were from that particular run. Many apps allow you to view these kinds of results for a single activity, and I'm not sure whether I had access to this feature in your app or in another one.

It could be, for example, that the best 5 km during that 12 km run was the segment from 3.45 km to 8.45 km, and that would be shown as the best 5 km split from the most recent activity. Lifetime personal bests are a separate thing and can be checked where you mentioned.

Sorry for the long explanation this time, but I hope it's clearer now. Being able to check times for specific distances this way makes it easy to monitor current trends instead of only looking at old, often outdated data.

  • Garmin in fact does record the best performances within each run activity, and the data is stored in the activity FIT file, but I do not think Connect ever displayed it, although it would be a trivial change, since the data is available. At least at recent watch models. You can still export the fit file, and view it with https://www.fitfileviewer.com/ where it is displayed at the very bottom:

Another option is linking your Connect account with Strava (or another similar 3rd party service), and checking it out there.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I saved the activity as a .fit file. What a sea of data! :)

Garmin could definitely make much better use of it than they do now. At the moment, you can browse tons of analyses on the watch or phone that might be useful at an Olympic level, but a few really basic things are missing.

For example, in the .fit file there's a "Records" category where the entire workout is broken down into thousands of rows. Here, the AI needed just a few seconds to find exactly what I needed and also gave me a fantastic training analysis with suggestions.

This made me think that any company that properly integrates advanced AI into their apps will gain a massive advantage in this market. Out of sentiment for Garmin, I really hope they don’t sleep on this. Although, looking at the last year or two, I get the impression they’re very conservative — in theory putting data above hype and consciously focusing on different priorities than Samsung or Google.

The problem is that if they wake up in two years, even with a strong battery and the best display, they’ll be like retro Casio watches for runners who still like short shorts from the 70s.

But anyway, that’s off topic. :)

Big thanks for the advice. For anyone looking for the most detailed insights, I highly recommend throwing your .fit or .csv files into an AI chat and letting it roll!

  • AI integration is available in Connect+ (paid subscription). I do not use it, so cannot comment on it more.
