Synch issues when phone connected to Wifi

I have a Garmin instinct 2 solar, recently bought used. I have some curious synch issues which I believe is something to do with the Connect app on my phone rather than the watch. The watch won't synch if the phone is connected to internet using WiFi. I have tried three different good Wifi, work, home and friend's and each time I am unable to synch the watch. However, I discovered that if I turn WiFi off on the phone and use the mobile data signal instead of Wifi I have no problems with the synch.

I have tried the advised resolutions of turning off phone and watch and restarting, I've tried re-pairing watch and phone; deleting watch in bluetooth and re-adding; I've taken the watch back to factory settings and starting again. Nothing works, except for disabling Wifi on my phone.

Since the watch synchs fine over mobile data I can't see it being a watch issue, more a problem with how Connect uses wifi/mobile data. Phone is a Moto g10, Android version 11.

  • Sounds rather like a problem of the phone. WiFi and Bluetooth both work on the same frequency band, and certain phones do not use sufficiently efficient frequency filters, so if the WiFi and BT channels are close, the WiFi can seriously interfere with low power BT devices like Garmin's watches (while standard BT devices can still work sufficiently well). Sometimes, completely resetting the network settings on the phone can help, since the channels are re-assigned, and if you are lucky the separation may be sufficient to make the WiFi and BT work simultaneously. Another option is using the 5GHz band for WiFi, if your phone and your WiFi access point support it, and disabling the 2.4GHz WiFi band completely.

Unfortunately, Moto G10 is indeed known for low quality filters for the frequency separation. You can find some tips also here: https://www.google.fr/search?q=moto+g10+wifi+bluetooth+interference, but if it does not help, I'd recommend changing the phone.

  • Hello, thank you for your help, appreciate it. Oddly enough when there is no activity waiting to be synched on the watch, i.e. no fit file to transfer, the watch 'synchs' fine, it's only when it attempts to transfer a file. Maybe it's fine for 'handshaking' but nothing else. My old Instinct 1 did synch fine with no issues on the same phone.

Anyway, it's not really a problem turning off the phone wifi to synch - I'm too mean to buy a new phone! Thanks though.
