Garmin Connect Android Notifications broken

Starting with the October 8th 2025 5.18 Android release, notifications sent from phone to watch no longer vibrate the watch.

I wear a Garmin Forerunner 255 and use a Google Pixel 9A with the latest version of Android as well as the most up to date security release.

If I set a timer or alarm on the watch, it will vibrate at the conclusion of said timer/alarm, but all notifications received on the phone sent to the watch simply do not vibrate it.

It is not related to “do not disturb”, that setting is turned off.

I downgraded to the 5.17.2 and the watch started to vibrate on phone notifications again. Therefore, as far as I can tell it is a software bug with Garmin Connect version 5.18.

EDIT: This seems to be related to Androids own "Do Not Distrub", previously Garmin Connect would ignore Androids Do Not Disturb setting, but now it is following it.

I have tried to escalate this to the Garmin Android Dev team (reachable at [email protected] - I'd suggest people also try to reach out), but the person who responded to my emails was unable to understand the issue, even after pointing them to this forum post & others on social media.

  • Same here, I messaged the team to revert to previous functionality. It's much better being able to independently manage DND for watch or phone

  • Yes, I sent him and some other Garmin reporters a link to this article, so it gains some traction and others that use this functionality may see it.

  • Please keep this feature as currently deployed.  DND is exactly that do not disturb me.  Your using the phone status incorrectly.  If you want your notifications on one device and not the other set the device you don't want to make noise to silent.  This is different from DND.  I'm a shift worker and have been waiting for this.  When I dock my phone it goes into DND, and I mean do not disturb.  I don't need my watch vibrating when my phone is in DND.

If your going to update this feature I would suggest what Fitbit does.  You have three options with respect to DND.

    1. Follow phone setting (this included the phones selective DND)

    2. Ignore DND

    3. Disable notifications on watch.

This may satisfy the user base who are incorrectly using the end status on their phone.

  • This is the answer i got today :

  • In my opinion is the right behaviour, because, In my case, if I don't want notifications I have to put do not disturb mode in the phone and in the Garmin.

This new update has all the sense and a lot of users where asking for it for years. If you don't want to have notifications in the phone you can just silence it and you will keep it on the Garmin, like I do, but if I have the phone in do not disturb is because I don't want to be disturbed, neither from the Garmin. And you can set contacts or apps that avoid the do not disturb mode and the Garmin will still vibrate.

So, as said, this is very useful for a lot of people and has been largely asked.

In my opinion, this is the right behavior. In my case, if I don’t want notifications, I have to activate Do Not Disturb mode on both my phone and my Garmin.

This new update makes perfect sense, and many users have been asking for it for years. If you don’t want to receive notifications on your phone, you can simply silence it and still get them on your Garmin, like I do. But if I have my phone in Do Not Disturb mode, it’s because I don’t want to be disturbed — not even by the Garmin.

You can also set specific contacts or apps to bypass Do Not Disturb mode, so your Garmin will still vibrate for those important notifications.

As mentioned, this feature is very useful for many people and has been highly requested for a long time.

  • incorrectly using the end status on their phone.

This has been this way for many years and I found it works well for my needs (as did others obviously). So no, we aren't incorrect. If you wanted this as an added setting, that should have been requested and users given a choice to ADD this as an action, not having it forced on us who have used it this way for long periods of time. And to have it changed without warning? Sucks.

So no, we aren't using it incorrectly. We are using it as it was designed and we liked it. You can like the way it is better, but it doesn't make your way right or wrong.

  • I would respectfully disagree.  They did not have it right before, and they do not have it right now.  What would be right would be to allow it as an option on whether you want it tied to your phone DND settings or not.  For you, your preference is tied. For myself and many others, it is not tied.  The suggestion of simply "Silencing" does not work for those that have DND exceptions where they might need the phone to make noise otherwise (Security system phone calls in the middle of the night for example - where the vibration is not strong enough to wake you if you are sleeping).

If it can be turned on or off in the software (which it obviously can as demostrated by the change), give me the ability to choose what I want.  Do not make the choices for me.

  • Sorry but I don't agree on this one.

Having them synced without any sort of toggle is a terrible idea.

For me it was always perfect with phone on DND so I don't overhear very important things like system calls, alarms etc.

The Garmin watch that didn't adopt the DND from my phone showed all other notifications via vibration so I can decide if I need to check the phone or not, that works very well for me so I don't have any unnecessary vibrations or sounds during the day.

But ideally as now the functionality is there, they should Implement a switch so everyone can be happy.
