V5.17.2 Missing Audio Outputs during activities

Since v5.17, Audio Outputs during activities have been acting up for which I have Audio Outputs directed to the phone.  For me using a Fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm watch, I only get one of the three expected Audio Outputs on each lap of a Walk or Hike activity.  The Audio Output I get is not always the same, meaning which of the three I get is random.

If I had access to the code, I'd check the queuing depth or technique being used for the Audio Outputs.

I know I could set the Audio Outputs to Watch, but due to traffic and other noise, I wouldn't be able to hear them.  Setting them to my Phone allows me to hear them on the phone's much louder speaker even in noisy environments,

  • Are you running the latest GC Mobile android version? Updated recently to 5.17.2

Related thread - No audio prompts

  • Yes, I'm running and have tested v5.17.2 and the problem exists.  I also tested v5.17.0 and v5.17.1.  The problem did not occur prior to v5.17.0.

I've read that the Audio Prompt problem may have gone away with v5.17.2, but this is not the same problem.

  • Exactly. GC now talks, but not as good as before, there are no current interval instructions for instance.

  • I've verified that the problem also exists in v5.18.

  • It looks like we do have a team investigating this. I'd like to get you added to the investigation. Do I have your permission to send you an email requesting additional information about your experience?

This problem exists for more than 3 weeks now. Still unsolved.

  • No time, heart rate alerts VOICE hasn't worked for longer than 3 weeks, brah. You're giving those pesky engineers way too much credit.

  • Audio Prompts in general remain inconsistent even with the latest software.I started experiencing issues in early September when prompts just stopped all together. With the latest version of Garmin Connect (5.17.2),

    Most critical for me:

    1. I am not getting full Navigation Alerts from my Garmin Edge 830.
    2. I am not getting consistent Audio prompts from my Garmin Fenix 7 activities (e.g. "Timer Started" for Walks or Strength not occurring consistently, nor are the "Timer stopped" messages consistent. I'm not comfortable to try using the watch on hikes given this issue.

    Related observation:

    • When trying to confirm that I did have Navigation Prompts activated and that the volume was up high enough, selecting the "Alert Volume" setting has varied in the past. This is one of those things you set once and then don't touch as it works as you want it to and forget how you did it. I remember having a slider (? or something) to adjust the volume in addition to using the volume controls. Then there was also a verbal message that repeated as you adjusted the volume with the phone's volume controls. The operation of this setting is not intuitive nor consistent with other volume setting controls.
    • Now (and for some time now), there is a small "in progress" circling arrow icon next to the greyed out Alert Volume setting that spins but does nothing and goes nowhere. There is no verbal text heard nor a control displayed with the volume setting. It doesn't work.

    My hardware & Software:

    • Samsung S21 5G
      • Android 15
      • OneUI 7.0
    • Garmin Connect: 5.17.2
    • Edge 830 : version 9.75   (every ride I do uses navigation)
    • Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar  version 23.18   (using Hikes, Strength, Walks in September through current)

It appears to be still rampant and causing pain in many places. I'm also wondering if there is a status page or the definitive source for updates on this particular issue rather than searching through multiple, independent threads on the forums.

    Additional information:

    • An "Audio Prompt in Progress" message appears in my Android Notifications. I would turn this OFF if I could, and I'm not sure why this would appear. I'm riding a bike, or hiking or other activity. I'm trying to use my Garmin hardware and not the phone. Why does this message appear? This behavior is new and different from past behavior.
    • I do play music when I ride alone. I occasionally run other Apps that use my phone speaker (eg. RWGPS or Google Maps). Prior to this bug, the music would get interupted with Garmin Audio Prompts. I have tried both with and without the music playing and the inconsistent navigation prompts remain the same.
