Japanese language display for Forerunner 45, on Android

I have a Forerunner 45, and I run Garmin connect on Android.

The system language on my smartphone is Japanese. 

The garmin connect app shows the japanese text with no issue, but the display on my watch is all gibberish.

I tried going to "app languages" in my smartphone settings to change the language just on Garmin Connect, but it seems that Garmin connect only takes the system language and has no option to change to an alternative language. 

I have two questions:

Is there just no alternative for my forerunner 45?

What smartwatch models have japanese display installed in the smartphone by default?

    From your description it is unclear to me whether you speak about a specific screen of the Garmin Connect, or whether you mean the watch itself. Perhaps a screenshot of the app, or a photo of the watch with the broken text, would demonstrate it better.

    Generally, Garmin Connect on Android uses indeed the system language, though some Android brands and versions allow a per app setting.

    On the other hand, the language on the watch itself, is completely independent from the phone language, and can be set to any of the options available for your watch model. I am not really familiar with Forerunner 45, but AFAIK Japanese is available only on the APAC models (a different watch than the standard FR45).

    This is what the watch displays if I have my phone language set to Japanese. 

    The garmin connect app displays Japanese fine as intended. It uses the system language by default. if I try to change just the app to english, Garmin Connect does not come up in the individual app language settings list in the systems settings.

    It is the notification directly on the watch. Your watch apparently is not the APAC version, hence it does not support Asian languages. The language of the Connect app is irrelevant, and even if you set it to English, the watch will not display Japanese notifications properly anyway. For that you need a different model of the watch - either the APAC version of Forerunner 45, or a more modern model having all languages included (like newer models of Fenix, Forerunner, Epix, Instinct, etc) .
