Upload manual activity from Garmin connect to Garmin Forerunner 970 watch

Hello,

In today's running session Forerunner 970 decided to stop working (screen stuck randomly 15mins in). Once i finished my session and got home, i connected the watch with the charger which unblocked the phone thankfully. However the session was only recorded for the first 15mins and since i am keeping close track of my sessions i created the activity manually on Garmin connect app. However there is no way to see it on my Garmin watch. No matter what i do to sync the phone with the watch, restart it, pair/unpair the activity is not showing on my watch stats. Am i missing something? Is there something else i can do to upload the manual activity from the app to the watch? Is this a known defect?

Alex

  • Is this a known defect?

I would not tell a defect. It is simply not the purpose of the watch. There is Garmin Connect for that. The watch was designed to record activities, and all the metrics associated with them.

  • Yes I agree it’s designed to record activities, however when the watch malfunctions there should be an alternative. The associated data is influenced by each activity ie. For example daily/weekly metrics like running performance, training readiness , running tolerance, body battery, recovery etc, change accordingly if I add a 20k run. Still that’s not my main point, since there is an option from garmin connect app to add an activity manually and the watch synchs with the app the activity should be added to the watch as well! Garmin itself states that in their FAQs about synching manual activities from Garmin connect app. The fact that’s it’s not showing in the watch is clearly indicating an issue..

  • You cannot recalculate any training metrics from a manually entered activity. When the original activity file is missing, there is no vital data like the heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, training load, training effect, running dynamics, etc, etc. That metrics is being calculated in real-time using all the available sensors, and when the data is lost, there is no way to reinvent them. Adding a manual activity cannot help in such case. It is only good for yourself, to remember you did the activity, but the metrics cannot be recovered (well, unless you are able to find some remnants of the interrupted activity recording on the storage of the watch).

  • Yes most of the metrics don’t exist in the manual activity and can’t be added, however the training plan is also affected. If at least the manual activity was added the plan could consider the mileage and the pace and adjust accordingly and not consider a complete lack of training messing up the whole week. Moreover having HRM600 strapped I would expect these metrics to be available and somehow be combined with the manual activity.

Either case that’s not the point. Whether we agree or not is irrelevant. There is one fact as stated by Garmin, manual activities can be created in the app and uploaded to the watch by syncing. Since this is not happening in my case it’s an issue.

  • Garmin itself states that in their FAQs about synching manual activities from Garmin connect app.

I didn't know that was possible. Do you have a link to the FAQ?

  • I didn't know that was possible.

I do not think it is possible either.  might have confused it either with HRM 600 activities started manually from the Garmin Connect app, or with the Store & Forward feature of select Garmin's HRMs. Unfortunately, in his case, he did not start the activity on HRM 600 through the app, and the watch activity was apparently lost due to the crash, so the Store & Forward function won't work either.

He could still try to sync the strap with the app, or attempt to download the remaining data to the partially recorded activity on the watch, but I do not quite believe it could work. In any case, the manually added activity won't help anything else than having it logged.
