Campaign to get Garmin to remove autosave from watches

It's clear from the many discussions here and elsewhere that the auto save function on Garmin watches is seriously irritating and has no useful function.  I've not read one comment from a user who likes it.

How does anyone feel about a combined campaign to get Garmin to at least make this an opt-in function?  I'm not sure what it would look like but I imagine it would be in the form of an online petition.

I'm open to suggestions.  We need to get Garmin more responsive to this ridiculous function.

  • So you are saying that power save auto save is activated also with auto pausing for a long time? Interesting, I rarely use auto pause.

But yes, with Resume later and manual pausing you'll have to remember to resume the activity manually. If auto pause also triggers auto save, I don't think there's any other option than to set the Power save timeout to Extended, which gives you 25 minutes.

  • Auto pause will not auto save. I did a test now and stopped it after 65 minutes in auto paused stated.

  • On the same model watch?  That's odd.  I've only let it sit once on autopause.  I'll test it again in the morning.

  • Not the same model, but it should hopefully work very similar on all models. I'm using Enduro 3.

When I tested I used Run, enabled auto pause and turned off GPS and then put the watch on the table so it wouldn't log any steps that could give me a pace.

  • If the battery drains because I forgot to "stop"/"resume later" my activity, then is my mistake. Instead the watch autosaving is not our mistake. Also if someone forgets about saving an activity so long that the battery is a concern, then that person probably had an accident, in which case KEEPING THE ACTIVITY ON (I use livetrack) is IMPORTANT. I would understand if the activity autosaves when the watch is about to turn off due to no battery, It autosaving after a hardcoded time, its a cheap solution that as OP says, have no benefit for any user.

Adding to it, the "Approaching my bed time do I still want to resume later" is another thing that gets annoying. I am reaching the point of actually disabling sleep tracking due to this annoyance.

To summary it, we bought a watch, we don't want to be reminded of something we know, or don't care, and we definitely want to be able to control what our watch does. These 2 irritating features, can easily be new options in the settings.

    - Autosave paused activities -> "After X time" / "On critical battery before turning off".

    - Resume later bedtime reminders -> "Yes" / "No".
