Hiking Challenges (monthly / quarterly)

There are monthly and quarterly challenges for everything. (walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, gym, ...)

Why are there none for hiking? Any specific reason? These could require a mix of distance and elevation gain in order to complete. Can't be that difficult to add them.

It's not very satisfying when you have to track your hikes with 2000ft elevation gain as walks.

  • I know this is only a semantic thing, but for me walk = hike.

  • I get why you see it this way and for sure different people have a different view on this.

For me it's 2 completely different things.

    On a brisk walk I typically don't get a heart rate over 120 - 130.

I use shorter hikes (1-2 hours) a lot as a form of workout where I push myself and have heart rates of 150 - 180. (uphill of course ;) ) Therefore I want to track them differently and it would be nice to get the weekend, month and quarter badges.

The badges are also a motivation to get those extra 2 activities in in a month or get up and leave the house to get the weekend badge. I don't care about the walking badges at all as while healthy I don't identify them with an actual workout.

  • Rename your walks to hikes then you can see them easily.

Not all of us can get lots of elevation gain during walks/hikes.  I have one :"hill" nearby of about 80 ft. I would have to spend all day going up and down for 1/4 mile every up/down. Hiking for me is walking on non-surfaced roads or paths.

  • Actually, many Garmin watches can update VO2max based on walking activities (if no running has been recorded for a month), but hiking activities does not provide VO2max. So I suppose Garmin also kind of suggests that walking should be used when walking on a smoothish hard surface, and hiking is for more challenging surfaces (where your pace is slower and possibly erratic).

  • If I rename walks to hikes then what is the hiking activity for the app offers? Kind of defeats the purpose.

If you don't have hills it makes total sense to focus on walking. I grew up in the alps. You go on mountains there and you probably won't put hikes and walks in the same category anymore. :-) Same probably counts for people living in Colorado. Not everybody needs to complete every challenge but it would be nice to have the choice.
