Showing heart rate during workout

I have a Venu and a Galaxy S23 Ultra.  I would like to show my heart on the phone screen during a workout.  I'm ok with a sort of "floating widget", split screen mode, a cycling app that can get the data, whatever.  I hope to avoid checking my wrist... First world problems, I know, but it would be very nice to just look at the phone screen as I do with all of my other cycling data.  Is this possible?  Thank you.

  • Broadcast heart rate to phone and let some app show the received HR.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I have tried this, but so far have failed to find an app that can pick up the broadcast.  Do you know of any for Android and the S23 Ultra?

  • Why don't you just use Garmin Connect? It shows the heart rate data live in real-time. No HR broadcasting necessary.

  • Good question... I should have explained.  During a ride my phone is my bike computer, and it is displaying my riding statistics (usually SuperCycle).  I tried adding it in split screen mode, but Connect can't be displayed that way.  Ideally I would have an HR display within SuperCycle (or some other app... I'm open to ideas) but it doesn't pick up the broadcast.

  • Which Venu is it? Some models broadcast only over ANT+, and many phones or apps are not ANT+ enabled. The following Venu models do support HR broadcasting over Bluetooth, although I am not familiar with them, so do not know whether they broadcast over BT by default, or whether it is optional, and you have to enable it. Try checking the manual.

    • Venu 2 | Venu 2S
    • Venu 2 Plus
    • Venu 3 | Venu 3S
    • Venu Sq 2 Music
  • I have a plain old Venu, not the 2/2S, 3S, Sq,etc.  I'll see what I can find about broadcast method.  I guess I assumed Bluetooth, but, well, assumptions...

This seems to indicate it's Ant+.  But how does Connect get it?

  • Plain Venu does not support HR broadcasting over Bluetooth. You either need a phone with the ANT+ interface, or a different watch, or a chest strap HRM.

  • Rats.  That is unfortunate.  Thank you for the reply.

  • The least expensive option is an external HRM chest strap. You can get a decent one for some 30€, and perhaps even less.

  • Hey, so I figured I had nothing to lose, so I did some experimenting.  I got a cheap Ant+ adapter (CooSpo USB ANT Stick,ANT+ Dongle on Amazon) and a USB-A to USB-C adapter.  I installed the Ant+ USB and wireless services and then plugged in the adapter.  Jepster was then able to detect it!  It picked up the broadcast and showed the HR.  So, there is a viable proof of concept.  It dropped the signal once during a ride, and dropped the dongle entirely another time, but there is at least a working method.  It's a little awkward, as there's a dongle sticking out of the bottom of the phone, but for smooth rides it works.  Maybe there's a way to secure it for longer rides.  I guess that's the next step, and will be essential for MTB.

I've tried to post a photo but it just keeps telling me it's not allowed.  Sigh...
