Forerunner 255 is not syncing data to the connect app at all

I tried to sync data from my Forerunner 255 to the garmin connect app. The device is shown as connected device in the app. I can also enter all the settings from the app i can also enter from the watch itself.

But the training session data etc. itself is missing even if i see them all on the watch. The start screen of the app tells me to activate data uploading for the garmin watch to get more functionality but the it asks me then to give consent for the data processing. I don't want the latter since i think, it activates cloud upload, which is something i don't want. But i wan't the data on my local smartphone app instead.

Giving cloud consent absolutely wont make any sense, since the watch itself is capable to display all the statistics and graphics, so why it should pass first through the cloud and then back to the connect app again?

What i tried:

Several reconnects/pairings of the device. Several reboots. Garmin connect deinstalled several times. If i sync the data from the watch it tells always "data synced successfully".

What do i miss here?

In that case do not use Garmin Connect, use Garmin Explore. Although the functionality is much more limited than at Garmin Connect, it works offline too. Garmin Connect needs the cloud access, since unlike Garmin Explore, it does not store the data locally.

So garmin Explore can process all the fitness data? It doesn't look like so in the app store preview.

However, I can hardly believe that garmin connect needs to have cloud access to simply display data from a watch that is directly connected to it via Bluetooth. This would absolutely make no sense especially since no cloud is needed to calculate anything. Like I said, even the watch can display the data without cloud. Why the smartphone shouldn't?

For any other data I agree, like insights etc. This might be something different

  • So garmin Explore can process all the fitness data?

No, as I wrote, it has a much more limited functionality, but you can see some basic activity data there too. Its primary purpose is different than at Garmin Connect. However, if you do not want to use the cloud, it is your only option, apart of using 3rd party services or apps. Though, most of the 3rd parties use cloud storage anyway too, except of the Golden Cheetah Open Source project. At least, I do not know any other than this one.

  • What do i miss here?

The app is only a viewer of the data stored on the Garmin servers so the data must be stored online. There is no storing of data in the app so you must allow data processing/give cloud consent to view the data in the app.

It Seems like it is as it is even if I don't have any understanding for this, since it's completely nonsense and just has the intention to collect data.

So what I need is a viewer for the device itself. I think I have to look for third party.
