Is there a way to see notification history on the watch?

I use a Pebble watch but it is not supported by my new android phone.

On Pebble, after notifications are read or dismissed, the full history is still available from the notifications menu (unless that is separately cleared).

Does the Garmin Forerunner 55 provide any similar functionality?

It seems that if I dismiss a notification ("back"/"x"), it vanishes permanently. Is my only option to always remember to press "back" instead of "up" ?

  • The watch shows the notifications on the phone. If it is still available on the phone you can access them on the watch in the notifications glance.

If you dismiss a notification it will also disappear from the phone. You don't have to do anything when you get a notification. It will disappear automatically after the timeout.

  • Just like said, but I'll add that at least if you have an Android phone, you can check dismissed notifications from the phone's notification history.

  • Thanks, but the idea is to be able to see the history without having to take out the phone.

Sounds like I shall just have to be very careful on the garmin to never dismiss a notification I might wish to look at again.

Re "The watch shows the notifications on the phone" - Is that why the interface is so laggy? It is re-downloading notifications every time you look at them?

  • Re "The watch shows the notifications on the phone" - Is that why the interface is so laggy?

No. What Andy meant is that the watch shows the same notifications as you can see on the phone notification list, and not that it reads them directly from the phone. BTW, on my watch it is not laggy.  There could be perhaps a slight delay at the first opening of the Notifications widget, when the connection is checked, if your phone tends to shut down the BT communication and needs longer time to wake up. I do not observe any lag there either, in my case, though.

It is re-downloading notifications every time you look at them?

No. You can test it easily yourself by disabling Bluetooth. BT is needed only for discarding the notifications, because by discarding a notifications on the watch, you discard it on the phone as well. There may be a communication request just at the moment of the opening of the Notifications widget, and you may be even warned that the watch is not connected, but you can then review the full text of all the already loaded notifications without the connection anyway.

  • Also, since the watch shows the notifications that the phone has, it means that if you dismiss a notification on the phone, it will automatically and almost immediately disappear from the watch as well (if bluetooth is on). And if an existing notification changes on the phone, the change will be reflected on the watch.

That's why "notification history" on the watch doesn't make that much sense: the notifications on the watch are just a mirror of notifications of selected apps on the phone.

  • It'll take some getting used to going back to having to pull out my phone. I'm used to being sent security codes, for example, and being able to access them a day or two later from my wrist. On a Pebble, with the default android app, the notifications go to the watch and stay in the history until you remove them. I have just found gadgetbridge that works on android 15 and I see that it has an option to toggle whether or not to delete from watch when dismissed on phone.

The lagginess seems to come and go. Does seem a lot slower when opening notifications after not using for a while.

  • If you do not discard the notification, it stays on the watch, so no need to pull out your phone, as long as you keep the notifications you want to check again.

However, security codes usually expire after a few minutes or hours anyway, so am not sure whether it really helps in this specific case.

  • It helps me in this specific case. I'm not talking about 2FA. It could be the text of an sms message with the entry code for a building, or an amazon locker code, or a shop pickup code, etc. When using the pebble, I can clean up notifications on my phone but still have the information available on my wrist for quick access. I can probably find workarounds for the garmin (eg. the note app) but my current workflow is very convenient for me.

Anyhow, it's looking like replacing the pebble by the garmin is a no-go. The vibration motor on the garmin is so woefully weak that I almost never feel it, and there seems no way to change the vibration pattern or intensity, so I am forever missing phone notifications. The beep is mostly audible but using it is rude for people around me.

Not sure if this is typical for a Forerunner 55 or if there is something wrong with your watch. You might want to inquire with Garmin Support about it, or at least in the Forerunner 55 forum. The vibration motor on my Epix (Gen 2) is plenty strong.
