Phoenix 7 measuring wrong distance while using running function

Hi all,

I am a runner and I have had a Phoenix 7 Solar Sapphire for the past few years. I recently ran 2 marathons (Chicago in 2022 and Frankfurt today). In both races the watch measured wrong distance with a large error. Yesterday it reached 44km when I crossed the finish line. I noticed since the beginning it was off and it was pretty useless throughout the race. Very frustrating.

Regarding Satellite, I had the autoselect mode on, which takes the best option based on the environment I am in.

I recently reset the watch and I regularly download updates on garmin express.

Have you encountered the same problem? Thank you.

  • Keep auto-calibration on, but you can reset the calibration, and then do a few runs under good GPS conditions (open space, flat terrain, few trees, no buildings or walls in proximity). Once the strap is properly calibrated, and the distance accurate, you can disable the auto-calibration (although I keep it on all the time, and it works pretty accurate anyway).

  • Some of the laps were shorter than 1km, so I don't see the lap report claiming a distance of 44km. The last lap (#44) was only 0.38km, while lap 22 was 0.42km (did you push lap at halfway?). In addition to the 42 1km laps, that's a total of 42.80, which within rounding is equivalent to the 42.81km Garmin reports for the total activity. That discrepancy is also about what I'd expect, given the course was likely a little long, you probably didn't run the measured racing line, plus some GPS noise.
