Live track not resuming SAFETY ISSUE

Generally Live Track and my Strava Beacon work faultlessly from my 510+phone (via bluetooth).

HOWEVER there seem to be a couple of routes nearby where there seems to some kind of interference strong enough to cause the 510 to disconnect from the phone, it will reconnect shortly after BUT the live track and thus Strava beacon DO NOT resume, this is a huge safety issue should anything happen.

Why does it not resume / continue the Live track?

Why is there also no way in the connect app to manually refresh or restart the live track?

  • I just tried to simulate it - started an activity with LiveTrack, then a few minutes after the session was started, I've disabled BT on the phone to simulate the disconnection, and kept it disconnected for couple of minutes. The blue dot on the LiveTrack map stopped flashing. As soon as I enabled BT again, the LiveTrack session resumed (blue dot flashing again) with no action required on my side.

I do not know why it does not work in this way on your side, but even if the LiveTrack session does not restart on its own, you can always start it manually from the app by pushing the button "Start Live Track" in GC menu » Safety & Tracking » LiveTrack

  • Interesting and def' not the case I frequently experience.

The headunit (510) will bleep and flash-up 'Phone disconnected' and some time later,
it will bleep again with 'Phone connected' then another bleep 'live track started' but that is not the case - the blue-dot on the live track stays 'stuck' at the point of disconnection for the entirety of the activity.

If you go into GC (presume you mean Garmin Connect) - I have Live Track set to "Auto Start" and if an activity is running you cannot select 'Start LiveTrack' in the app, it says to start activity from the device (which is already running).

  • Your phone may be perhaps using some battery saving features, shutting down the Bluetooth, the mobile data usage, or putting apps in the background to sleep. In your place I would search on your phone in that direction.

  • Def' not any phone settings - been using it for years w/510.

I know of 2 locations it will happen without fail if I ride past. Both are transport companies that have some large radio(?) transmission equipment for their fleets.

  • Sorry, cannot help better. On my side it works as expected, but I do not have Edge 510. I recommend asking on the Edge forums - other Edge users may be able to help better. The Edge 510 forum was already archived and locked, since it is a discontinued model, but you can try your luck in other Edge forums - you will find them in the section Sports & Fitness (see the top menu). Or reach out to the Product Support.

  • ... BTW, did you test, after experiencing the radio interference near the critical spots, whether the phone restores the Internet connection, after experiencing the dropout? Once you move to a safe distance from the spot, try setting the phone into the Flight mode for a moment, and then back again to normal mode. Test whether BT works, whether the Edge is connected to GC, and whether the Internet connection is functional.
