Cycling Personal Records

Cycling records are not correct.  If did a 40.3K ride and it shows it as my PR for 40K.  However, it calculates the speed based on the overall time of 40.3K ride.  Strava calculates this correctly.  So my PR is crap on Garmin, I have to look at Strava.  Any fix for this?

  • The distance was an official distance so no matter what the watch says you ran a 5k. So, instead of running until the watch says 5k then just set the record manually. In Garmin Connect Web view the activity. Click cog wheel > Set as PR and select the distance.

  • Ok, next time. I don't remember exactly, this was 2 years ago, but there might have been a weekend 5k badge being involved in the decision to reach 5k Slight smile

  • This is cherry picking the best 40K segment in a ride.  Strava, does not do this.  If you do a 50K ride, it will see what you did in the first 40K, and if its the fastest you've ever done, it will record as your PR.

No, that's simply not true. I verified several of my Strava PRs (Best Efforts in Strava's terminology), and most of them are in the middle of the activity, hence exactly as "cherry picked" as at Garmin. And frankly told, that's the correct way (on both platforms), since using just the starting section would not work for detecting the PR if you do some warm up first.

  • perhaps with the difference that Garmin handles better problems when the GPS misbehaves. At Strava I have plenty of PRs that are PRs only because of GPS errors, and since it is impossible to edit the distance or the records at Strava

This is very telling.  Explain yourself to hold on to any credibility.  Strava does not have any devices, it is just a platform to look at your data from whatever device you use.

  • Strava does not have any devices,

Why should it matter? The data comes from Garmin (or from any other device). For example at Strava I currently have the 400m running PR detected with the time of 1s !! Just because I started the activity before the GPS was fully locked. Garmin did not even marked it as PR, but even if it did, it would be simple to discard it. At Strava, I'd need to remove or trim the activity.

  • It matters because you brought up GPS issues with Strava, which does not make sense to anybody who has used Strava before.  Again, for the simple reason that Strava does not make GPS devices.  So, this sounds like BS., which brings into question anything you say about this matter.

  • So according to you Strava does not use any GPS data from Garmin?

  • I think you misunderstand (or aren't aware) how Strava uses your data.

It takes the GPS data from your device and does calculate/process it. Therefore there might be differences in how the data is presented to you.

In addition Strava shows PRs e.g. for 40km that are inside a 60km cycling effort. And this is inside the 60km not at the beginning or the end.
