Contactless: Garmin misleading warning “your bank has not enabled (your card) for contactless payments”

In a spirit of collaboration, I very humbly raise a modest criticism regarding a warning - in my opinion misleading, which generates confusion - easily resolvable.

---

I would like to point out that all my credit/debit cards are contactless. In addition, two of them are stored in my Android smartphone as a Google Pay payment method.

The above implies that my cards work contactless perfectly.

Except with Garmin Connect.

---

In fact, my cards were acquired (stored) in Garmin Connect, but they received this warning:
“ERROR
This card cannot be added to your Garmin device because your bank has not enabled it for contactless payments”.

After a long, thorough search, the impeccable Garmin Support Center,   here  here  and finally here:

informs that my bank - quite simply - is not affiliated with the Garmin Pay contactless payment platform.

---

?? That said, wouldn't it have been better, as well as more correct and appropriate, to replace this warning:
"ERROR
This card cannot be added to the Garmin device because your bank has not enabled it for contactless payments".

with an immediately understandable and more appropriate warning:
“ERROR
This card cannot be added to your Garmin device because your bank does not currently have a commercial agreement with the Garmin Pay contactless payment platform”.

??

Given all this, I must assume that requesting an agreement between Garmin Pay and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena here is inappropriate, given the high level of this type of commercial relationship. Am I right?

I'd tell that not. If your bank does not want to participate, and does not allow Garmin to use their cards, Garmin cannot force them. You, as a customer have the possibility to make a pressure on the bank. You can select a bank supporting Garmin pay. Or you can use a free virtual CC supporting Garmin Pay, like for example the one from Curve.

  • Hi trux...

As you suppose, it is inappropriate to request an agreement between your bank and Garmin due to the high level of the commercial relationship.

It is not that my bank does not want to participate, probably the top management does not even know this platform, or they only think in terms of numbers.

Moreover, I have seen that in my country there are 43 banks that participate in Garmin Pay, not a few, but not many, and some of the largest are missing.

As a customer, but also as a former employee, I would not even dream of suggesting an agreement. Here bureaucracy reigns...

Interesting idea of Curve. I will look into it further.

    Thanks.

    You still have several options:

    • Ask you bank to implement Garmin Pay (if 43 banks in your country could do it, yours could certainly do it too, regardless how tough the bureaucracy is)
    • Change the bank to one that supports Garmin Pay
    • Use Curve or other similar virtual CC service
    • Change your Garmin watch for a brand supported by your bank
    • Don't use the watch for payments
  • Well done for clear explanation and thank you so much.  I have just had the same issue.  And wondered how it could be as I also have cards that work fine on my iPhone.  grrrr Garmin :(

  • Well done on figuring that out and thank you.  Saved me heaps of time as I too have cards on my iPhone that work just fine.
    Garmin!!! :(
