Please add "Meditation" as an activity type

Dear Garmin,

Can you please add Meditation as an activity type. The use case is:

  • sit on the meditation cushion
  • start the activity
  • the activity should track the relevant parameters (except GPS)
  • after the meditation ends, stop the activity

Optionally it would be nice if you could set a custom timer - a custom time period after which you'd get notified. This must be optional since usually when sitting in the zendo someone else will sound the end bell.

Currently I created Meditation manually but it has certain problems. The biggest one is that because it doesn't have an ID, external apps don't recognise the activity as Meditation. This happens for example in HeiaHeia which sees the activity just as "Garmin Import".

Please make Garmin devices meditation friendly and help all sentient being find happiness and the root of happiness.

Warmly,

Samo

  • Can you please add Meditation as an activity type.

It already exists. If your watch model does not support it directly, you can either record it as Yoga, Breathwork, or Cardio, and change it to Meditation later in Garmin Connect, or you can search the Connect IQ store for a suitable app. In the worst case, you can use a universal app for the automated assigning of the activity type, such as the apps "Any Activity" or "Any Sport".

You can also consider exchanging your watch for a model supporting Meditation directly. Currently, the models Lily 2, Lily 2 Classic, Venu 3, and Venu 3S support meditation natively: Activity Profile Options On My Wellness Watch | Garmin Customer Support

  • I've been renaming Yoga to Meditation after every session for at least 2 years and it works fine. No pretty pictures like the Strength activity but it has everything needed.

  • That would be 730 times I'd need to change the activity type ;)

  • @trux It isn't on the watch. I added it manually but since it's not an official activity type HeiaHeia (talked with their support) they (HH) can not auto import it as Meditation (they have this category but they can't match it with Garmin). What I have to do is go into HH and change the activity type there. Kinda useless.

The watch is a Garmin Solar Instinct 2. Would expect better support for 350 EUR watch. People are asking for this feature for a very long time. Code wise - It boils down to add a new Id and naming it Meditation. That would take the developers a few hours max - worst case a few days including testing and everything.

I'll check out the Any Activity and Any Sport, but I think it will still be a problem on the HeiaHeia side. For it to work the activity must be an official Garmin watch activity.

  • It boils down to add a new Id and naming it Meditation.

There is already one - it is the number 67 in Garmin's API, so all HH needs to do, is associating Garmin's activity ID 67 to their Meditation type. And you then either have to have a watch supporting the Meditation activity, or use a universal CIQ app, suc as the "Any Sport" or "Any Activity", and assign the Mediation activity type with its help.

For it to work the activity must be an official Garmin watch activity.

HH has no idea which activity was used for assigning the activity type, so do not worry about that

  • The Any* solution seems more viable now.

Do you know why Solar Instinct 2 does not have that activity? Any way to get it on the watch? Or as an alternative specify that my manually added Meditation if of type 67?

  • Do you know why Solar Instinct 2 does not have that activity?

Because Garmin did not put it on the watch. Instinct 2 has a limited memory, so adding all existing sports on it is not really possible. And since Instinct 2 is an Outdoor watch, outdoor activities were selected with a priority.

Any way to get it on the watch?

You can try getting hold of the activity definition file from somebody owning a watch supporting it, but it is quite likely it will not work on Instinct 2 anyway. Much simpler is using a CIQ app.

  • Thanks.

I now saw on the mobile app (not on the watch) that there is indeed an activity type Meditation. I can try to change my Meditation's activity type to Meditation. Do you think this would work?

There's warning: If you save your changes, this may remove some data fields from this activity. Do you want to continue?

My original activity was "Other" (created on the watch).

In other words: what is the definition of Garmin's Mediation - what does it track?

  • Do you think this would work?

If you mean exporting the activity to HH, then not, since the FIT file will always contain the original ID as it came from the watch, regardless of the change in Garmin Connect. So if you do not use one of the suggested CIQ app, you'd have to edit the activity file and replace the activity ID there before transferring it to HH.

what is the definition of Garmin's Mediation - what does it track?

I do not own any watch with the activity, so do not know. I guess the HR, and possibly the breathing rate, and/or HRV/Stress. You better ask on the Venu 3 or Lily 2 forums.

  • OK. So I checked out Any Sport and Any Activity. They are not supported on Solar Instinct 2 so I'm back at the start ;)
