activity overview map zoom?

When I get to a list of my prior activities and click one, there is a tiny map in the overview tab.

But, I can't seem to find any way to open a full screen, pan/zoom map so I can look at the detailed position info.

Am I misremembering or is this something they have taken away from the app in the recent UI revision? I am sure I zoomed in on tracks in the past, and I think this was via GCM, as I've never really wanted to bother with the website.

  • Just tapping on the map will open it in full screen.

  • Thanks. I can't tell you how many times I tried touching the map and not seeing this work. I tried taps, double taps, long-press, etc. I saw brief flickers of something but nothing like a map opening. Your message made me go back and try more deliberately. When I carefully tapped with my other hand instead of reaching with the same hand holding the phone, it did indeed open the map.

It seems like my usual thumb tap to the top of the screen has a little bit of motion to it, and it is interpreting this as either a vertical or horizontal scroll input. So those flickers were bits of animation either showing it was already scrolled to top, or slightly scrolling the map off the screen, or starting to suggest a tab switch.

I don't know much about this... Does an Android app somehow do its own touch gesture recognition or just get these scroll events from the system? I don't have such struggles with other apps I use. I am using a Google Pixel phone with up to date software.

One thing I think I did adjust a couple years ago was some system developer setting for animation speed, so UI transitions are snappier than the default. I'm not a fan of long, drawn-out UI animations...
