Just turn off automatic updates for the connect app and you'll be fine until they make breaking changes in the new version of the app. 

Fyi, some phones like the Pixel let you to enable App Installs from "Other Sources" (ie, outside the Play store) and you can just run the apk from your browser's downloads folder.

If i recall, previous Android versions you need to enable this manually from the settings, where as on Android 14 it'll popup and ask you when you try to install the apk.

It is sufficient (and more secure,) to enable once to install, then disable again afterwards; disabling after will not affect Connect from running after installation. 

And for those wondering, Apkmirror.com is widely considered safe.

How did I turn off automatic updates?

I reinstalled the old version but 2 days later the abomination returned. Tech support said there's no way to disable updates in the app, but is there a way in Android?

• Open play store 
• Search for Garmin connect
• On the detailed page of Garmin connect press the three vertical dots in the top right
• Uncheck "auto update on"

This works, although I installed 4.75, which seems stable.  Switched off auto update, but let's see how long this lasts.   Oh - and all I had to do was uninstall the V5 abomination and run the downloaded APK file.

They could also implement a server check for the version number. I bet pretty soon, the old version won't work anymore. I will be very upset if they go that route.
