Why doesn't Garmin accept measurements from non-Garmin scales?

Considering Garmin wants to be the go-to place for fitness why doesn't it accept measurements from other smart scale? I get the while marketing thing and the desire to sell their products. Why can't Garmin Connect link basic info or provide fields to manually enter info?

  • I am not sure Garmin Connect was really developed as the place-to-go for all fitness data. On my mind, it was rather made as an interface for their own devices.

Developing interfaces for 3rd parties costs a lot of resources, that Garmin does not really have enough even for their own software and hardware. However, Garmin offers a very flexible API to 3rd parties, so any manufacturer who wants to interchange data with Garmin Connect is free to request the access to the API, and develop their own interface.

  • Actually not that free, more complex API access costs.

I did not tell the API access is free (although some parts indeed are). I wrote that the 3rd party is free to request it, which could be also written "they are welcome to request the API access", or simply "they can request the API access".
