Steps and Calories Variance: Error?

Hi there.

This may be a common question or obvious so apologies in advance. I have tried searching but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I'm a bit of a novice at this sort of thing.

I have a Forerunner 35 which measures my heart rate,

My question is around steps and the calorie adjustment that MFP gives me and why there is such a variance between days where I do a similar amount of steps.

Last Saturday, I did around 14,000 steps and had a calorie adjustment of +652 - i.e. an extra 652 calories I could eat towards my goal (in theory. I never do). These steps were pretty much between 10:30 and 19:30 as I followed my daughter around on a day out/ambled around slowly, stopping, starting, etc.

The previous Thursday, I did around 11,500 steps and had a calorie adjustment of +980. However, these steps were mostly done over the space of a couple of hours during a constant walk.

Obviously that is a massive difference. Is there something wrong with my settings or is it an error?

If not, presumably the reason for the difference is that my heart rate is likely to have been higher on a constant walk for a couple of hours than ambling around a zoo stopping every few minutes?

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance and apologies
