Garmin Express not available for Chromebook

I've been trying to download different watch faces for my new Insinct 2, from Garmin IQ app. Every time I select one, it says I need to update with Garmin Express.

I don't have a Windows or Mac device, only a Chromebook. And GE isn't available for that.

Am I screwed for getting new watch faces?

  • What is the version of the firmware on your watch? You can find it in the device menu » System » About. Should be 14.12. Also scroll down, and verify the CIQ version. Should be currently at v3.4.3.

If the firmware and CIQ are up to date, then the problem may be with the cache of the Connect IQ app - try clearing it, or reinstall the app.

If the firmware is outdated, then you either have to wait till it is updated by Garmin Connect, or find a computer that you could use for the update with GE (some public computers allow you to install programs). One of possible reasons why the firmware was not updated yet, is that there is insufficient free space on the storage of the watch. Consider cleaning up folders like Activity, RemoteSW, Texts, Debug, Workouts, or Courses, in such case.

Another possibility is that the watch is not permanently connected to the smartphone, or that there is no Internet available on the smartphone all the time. The firmware download happens primarily during inactivity (often during the sleep), so if the watch or the phone uses battery saving features shutting down the communication, it prevents the watch from updating.

  • Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

The software version is 5.21 (c09ad4a).

    Edit: CIQ IS 3.2.7

Can't find anything specifically named firmware, but there is SNS 14.05 listed

    Tried reinstalling IQ, nothing

Storage should be fine, as it's literally one day old (straight from Garmin)

Connection to the phone/internet is good, as I can force sync at any time.

I've just realised my old man has a Windows laptop, and I'm sure he has a Garmin sat nav, so he's probably got Express installed. I'll have to try that next time I visit.

    Thanks again Thumbsup

This is the firmware version, and it is the initial 2 years old version. Current version is 14.12 and in the meantime there were numerous enhancements and fixes.

If it is one day old, then it is not surprising the firmware was not updated yet. The OTA upgrade takes typically several days. However, I strongly recommend updating manually using Garmin Express anyway.

  • I've managed to get an old Windows laptop working, and now got 14.12 installed.

IQ is now letting me install watch faces/apps.

    Thanks for you help
