Crazy High Intensity Minutes

So the issue is I went on my daily ride- no different from any other day where I ride about 35 minutes, office for 4-5 hours, ride home 35 minutes. I resume later after the first run. At the end of the ride home, I ended up with almost 700 intensity minutes.

The tracking of the activity seems ok.  Any ideas on how to fix this and prevent it?

  • Can you post the screenshot of the HR graph of the activity?

What is your setting for Intensity Minutes - the default one (based on Resting HR) or HR Zones? In the first case please post also the value of your 7 days avg Resting HR, and the value of your Max HR. In the second case, please post the screenshots of the IM settings, and of the HR Zone graphs of the concerned activity.

  • Based on HR zones from the beginning.  I just checked all of what you named and nothing was changed. The only difference is I rode a bit harder to and from the office, my heart rate was somewhat elevated, but to be expected, in the time between rides. I had slightly more time in zone 1: 13% vs. 6%, but that's also never been an issue before. 7 day resting is largely unchanged,  Intensity min HR zones is the same garmin default (toggled off).

  • Well, anyway, if you got 700 IMs within 70 minutes, then there is apparently a problem. The maximum you can get is 2×70 = 140. How does the IM graph for the concerned day look like? If you view it on GC web, you can select and zoom the critical section, and see exactly whether there are any intervals with IM > 2×min.

The mouseover tooltip will show you values on the graph for each 5 minutes interval during the day. If you find any intervals with IM increments bigger than 10, then make a screenshot and send it to the Support. It should be impossible.

I rather guess that your HR might have been elevated throughout the day, and that the IMs came from there. You'll see it on the graph too.

  • I've read about this before popping up randomly and haven't seen real explanations.  I looked everywhere, i also looked to make sure I turned the tracking off and instead of just pausing, I hit resume later for real and all that has been confirmed.  My distance, tracking times, everything is there in the activity and correct.  The only weird thing I see is that under intensity minutes is the bike ride was the 600 minute one and 77 minutes for move IQ cycling, so I'm led to believe there is some sort of issue with move IQ being part of the problem.  I have full data for the bike activity, so it wasn't move IQ, but an actual activity.

Not sure what you mean. I am following these forums very closely since years, and do not remember any threads with unexplained high IM values. And if you post the requested screenshots, there is a good chance we find the culprit in your case too.

Pausing, resuming, or not using any activity at all, plays no role in the IM counting (apart of having higher HR sampling rate during an activity). Intensity Minutes are being counted all day long, 24/7, regardless whether you record an activity or not. Intensity Minutes and Activities are unrelated features.

  • I've had these issues with you before where you don't really understand what's being said any you correct something completely else.

Yes, it is possible I did not understand you well. But instead of resorting to this aggressive reaction, you could simply tell me what I did not understand.

you were linking here that collected private data from users

Please stop spreading slander. A Connect IQ app cannot collect private data from users unless it connects to a remote site, and you gave it the permissions to do so. I definitely do not have any Connect IQ app that collects any private data. You can verify the priviledges granted to any CIQ app you use.

Do you know if it's possible to block you?

The best way would be using a non-numeric handle or an avatar that I could remember, and I will happily avoid replying to your posts.

BTW, you did not tell which watch you use, but since you now revealed who you are, I assume it is still Instinct 2. If it is really that case, then you may know there is a long-time-known bug, where the HRZ option for Intensity Minutes does not work, and Instinct 2 continues using the Resting HR regardless of the settings.

The bug was (allegedly) fixed only in v14 that is about to be released now. See the changelog at https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/instinct-2-series/354369/instinct-2-2s-system-software-14-12

So if your HR was above ~150% of the 7 days average HR during the day, the IMs could very easily grow significantly (and in double rate if the HR got to ~200% of the Resting HR)
