Heart Rate not reflecting correctly in Connect.

I notice there have been some previous queries with regards to the same, but it seems that Garmin has no resolution for the issue.

I use a Forerunner 255, and also do some training using my Wahoo App when using a KICKR V5.

What I find quite frustrating is that when exercising there are discrepancies with the times reflected in the various HR and Power Zones within Connect versus the time in the Zones reflected in the graphs within Connect. Specifically when I import the files from exercises done using the Wahoo App Connect only reflects 4 HR Zones and not 5 as per set up within my Garmin system. The graphs for both HR and Power reflect the actual and correct values, but for some reason Connect does not reflect the full time for the Zones.

- E.g. I trained for 1H 05M, and the HR graphs show as such in Connect, but the Zones only show 60M 46S. Furthermore, As per my personal settings some of the HR time was in Zone 5 - Maximum, but Connect only shows the maximum as Threshold.

- The same with the Power Information. Graph shows 1H 5M and Zones only show 1H 27s. Zones also only show Power as a max to be Zone 4, where some effort was above this in Zone 5 (The amount of time spent in Zone 5 in total was in actual fact ±18minutes in total. 3 sets of 2 MIN each @ 210W, 220W and 230W)

Garmin has to date not been able to give a reason why the Total Time and Zone Levels indicated in Connect differs from the information within the graphs itself.

I hope someone has an answer as it is quite frustrating having your level of effort indicated incorrectly. It always seems as though one is under training.

  • Normally, the zone tables valid at the moment of the activity are being sent together with all other data to Garmin Connect in the activity FIT file. So it would be interesting to see the FIT file of the concerned activity. If you wish that we look at it, zip it, and insert the zipped file here. We may be able to see where the problem comes from. I guess that the file from Kickr either does not contain any zone tables, or that the tables it sends, are not formatted correctly.

  • HI, thank you for the reply. The FIT file is only 73kb, so I am attaching it as is, and also including the WAHOO HR and Power Zones as reported. HR Zones amount to the full 1H 5M and the Power Zones to 1H 4M 55S.

I hope this helps and that the issue can be resolved.

NB I have at some stage tried to use my Garmin wrist unit in conjunction with the WAHOO App on the trainer, but cannot get these to work together. If there is a way to do this and be able to record both HR and Power directly into the wrist unit it could help.

  • OK, I have checked the file. It does contain the HR and Power zones definitions, but in a different format than what Garmin uses and expects. Please speak to the Support of KICKR and let them know their files are not compatible with Garmin.

This is how the HR and Power zones data is store in your file:

And this is how it is stored in a Garmin's native FIT file:

  • Hi

Thank you for the information. What bothers me is that the Garmin platform in Connect use generic Zones from what you posted. E.g. In my case my Resting HR is around 45 and Max is ±148. My Zones are set up as a %'age of Max in my device (Forerunner255) and this pulls through correctly to Connect. Why would Connect then not use my personal Zone settings to draw other TIF files with corresponding HR values in and report accordingly.

    - E.g. My Zone 2 (92 - 107: Also set up in my device accordingly), and is what Connect shows as Zone 1.

I would assume that once you have set your personal zones within the Garmin system, that any alternate information within the same ranges should be reflected accordingly.

Wahoo is definately not going to change their format to blend with Garmin.

It was just amazing that there had been multiple threads mentioning the same issue, but really no resolve.

NB Maybe Connect needs to be set up for one to confirm Zones as set up in the device one is using within Connect itself. Then a value is a value and it should fall within the personal set Zones. Maybe a good development option.

For me the better solution would be to be able to use my device when training on the KICKR, but then I will not be able to record the Power I train at (Yes, with Power Pedals, but not when using the Wahoo App to do Power settings.

  • Why would Connect then not use my personal Zone settings to draw other TIF files with corresponding HR values in and report accordingly.

There is no general HR Zone settings in Garmin Connect. If you look at the settings closely, you will find that they are a part of the device settings. The main idea behind it is that people may use different HR zones on different devices intentionally, and then also the HR Zones may change frequently (i.e. when based on the LTHR, the Max HR,...), hence can differ from activity to activity. If you then import a file from an external source, it is supposed to contain the zone information valid at the moment of the start of the respective activity.

Wahoo is definately not going to change their format to blend with Garmin.

The FIT file format was invented by Garmin, so everyone who uses it, should adhere to the standards used by Garmin, in their own interest.

  • Thanks. Will just have to live with the system. Regards.
