Use a second watch for tracking my elevation?

Hi!

I recently got myself the Vivoactive 5 after my Vivosmart 4 just wasn't up to date for my liking any longer.

I would've bought myself the Venu 3 as it comes with the altimeter, but even the Vivoactive 5 was a bit out of my budget, so I had to settle for it, instead of getting the Venu 3. I really like it, though, especially the various new features it comes with, compared to the Vivosmart 4.

After one month of using the Vivoactive 5 I realized that I do miss the altimeter and info about flights of stairs taken per day, plus I recently started bouldering, so knowing my altitude is kind of crucial for properly tracking a bouldering session.

My question is: is it possible to still use my Vivosmart 4 as a second watch to track my elevation? Can I just use both and Garmin Connect collects the altimeter data from the Vivosmart 4 additionally to all the other data collected from the Vivoactive 5? Does someone know how this works? Do I need to change any settings?

Your help is super appreciated!!

Thanks in advance :)

  • It could work if the Vivosmart 4 s set as the Primary Wearable Device. I recommend testing it with and without that change.

  • Thank you so much for that quick reply! But that means all the steps, heart rate, sleep data and so on that both watches track will be saved to Garmin Connect from the data tracked by the Vivosmart 4, right? Which defies the new watch I got. Man, I'm a bit sad I couldn't afford the Venu 3 as I miss the elevation/altitude data. Are there any other gadgets you can use for tracking exactly that? I've heard there are little navigation attachments by Garmin you can use for bike tours that do track elevation and altitude, I'm sure one can find them second hand at a cheaper price. Would these work for tracking flights of stairs and elevation during bouldering sessions. Do you know that by chance?

  • I am sorry, but there is no external barometric altimeter that you could connect to the watch and get the elevation monitored. You need a watch already having, in order to get that metrics.

If you really desperately want a watch with altimeter for similar price as Vivoactive 5, then you may have a look for example at Vivomove or Instinct 2: Garmin | Product Compareor at some older models of Forerunner, Fenix, etc.

  • Thank you again for that quick reply! I'm starting to realize that I made a little mistake by getting myself the Vivoactive 5. I can't return it anymore, so I might just wait and stick it out until I can afford another watch, one with an altimeter haha. It's a bit painful to know there's no solution, but I'll survive it. And maybe there's gonna be a better Garmin watch in a few years that meets my expectations (that I know of now).

Thank you again and have a wonderful rest of your day!!
