Steps count for the day seems a bit low considering a longer walk was tracked

Hi! I got a new Garmin Forerunner 55 and for my day yesterday it says on Garmin Connect that I only did 5,196 steps, for the whole day. However I did (and tracked) a 6.4km walk yesterday, so this amount of steps seems a bit small, no? Could my device be faulty?

I'm also syncing my Garmin data to Strava and on there I can see it says that I did 1,336 steps during the walk. Again, a bit low for 6km??

  • Could my device be faulty?

It is unlikely. It would not count at all if the accelerometer sensor was faulty. More likely the watch had problems to detect your steps. Did not you push a stroller, a caddy, used walking sticks, or prevented the natural movement of the wrist wearing the watch in another way?

  • Haha, that's how simple the explanation is! I was indeed pushing a buggy! Thank you for your reply! :)

It's a shame my step count will be wrong on days out with the buggy but as long as I understand what's happening, I'm ok with it.

You can simply put the watch into the pocket, it will still be able to sense the steps. Another possibility, if you want to keep monitoring the heart rate and have no chest strap, is attaching the watch to the ankle, as long as you do not mind not having easy look at the watch.
