Intensity Minutes Awarded Too Easily

My previous experience has been that Garmin Watches hand out Intensity Minutes way too easily for people (i.e. me) who have higher resting heart rates. It seems to use heart rate as one of the metrics when determining Intensity Minutes, and the more your heart rate is than a "normal" resting heart rate, the more Intensity Minutes. How have others addressed this, or have you just learned to live with it?

The Garmin Support website suggests that your average resting heart rate calculated by your Garmin device is used when calculating Intensity Minutes, but that has yet to be my experience.

  • My previous experience has been that Garmin Watches hand out Intensity Minutes way too easily for people (i.e. me) who have higher resting heart rates.

By default it is actually exactly the opposite case. The IMs are based on the avg 7 day Resting HR, and you have to reach at least some ~150% of it, to get some IMs. So the higher the Resting HR, the higher the threshold is. I am not sure whether the Max HR plays a role in it too, but the documentation does not mention it. However, if you think you get the IMs too easily, you can change the settings, and use HR Zones instead (if you own a watch supporting this option). You can also redefine the HR Zone to your liking, if you wish.

  • If you want to be awarded after hard work with intensity minutes, go into settings and change them to be rewarded based on heart rate zones - set zone 3 for moderate and zone 4for vigorous.
