Uninstalled Garmin Connect from phone - still uploading activities somehow!?!?!

I am having bluetooth issues with my phone and I have a lingering suspicion Garmin Connect is the cause due to odd behavior with that app and frequent/regular need to reconnect to my Garmin watch.

So, I uninstalled Garmin Connect to just remove that variable entirely.

However, despite being uninstalled from my phone (and phone rebooted), it seems Garmin Connect is still active in the background.  I completed a run and that run shows in Garmin Connect and Strava.

Android on a Pixel 6.

Garmin Connect is uninstalled and no ostensible indication of its existence in settings, permissions, bluetooth, anything on the phone.  To the eye it appears fully uninstalled and non-existent.  But, clearly it is still back there running.  Pretty sure that's bad app behavior that google would frown upon?

  • Do you have Wi-Fi enabled on your watch? If so, your activity will sync to Garmin Connect, even with the app uninstalled or Bluetooth turned off.

On my watch - Settings > Connectivity > Wi-Fi > Status & Auto Upload are On.

  • Yes, that's it, thanks.  Confirmed with a test activity that uploaded with phone off.  How does my watch know my Garmin Connect account credentials in order to upload via wifi?  It must have gotten some sort of authentication token from the Connect Mobile app and then that token remains valid even in absence of the app?  If I were to change my login credentials would the auto upload sync still succeed?  I guess that's my next test.

  • How does my watch know my Garmin Connect account credentials in order to upload via wifi?

When you originally setup the Wi-Fi feature, which can be done using Garmin Connect app, Garmin Express, or from the watch itself.
