Why do I have to get out a computer and download it there then and then sync my watch?
You do not need a computer. Just open the GPX file with the Garmin Connect app, and it imports as a Course. On my phone, files with the .gpx extension were associated with Garmin Connect automatically upon the installation of the app. On some phones, you may need to configure the association, for example if it was overridden by another app. You can also use the option "Open with" from the file manager ("Files" on many Android devices).
